Teaching children about cleaning can be a fun task and for many parents it is a bonding experience. What you may not know is that laundry room accidents are more frequent then you may think. Laundry packets have made our lives easier and these little laundry helpers are in households all across the United States. You may not think twice about them, but your children are intrigued by them. They are looking at your laundry packets when they discover them and are not thinking about how they get their clothing clean. They are thinking about how colorful they look and that they look, of all things, edible.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, in 2015 there were over 12,954 exposures to these liquid laundry packets to children 5 years and younger. That’s a staggering number! When I first read that statistic, I was shocked. How did all of these children have access to the laundry packets to begin with? Could something like this happen in my own home? Of course it could. Awareness about this issue is so important. We have seen way too many accidents happen in households and if a few simple precautions are taken these incidents could be avoided.

Getting the word out is something that is near and dear to my heart as a mother. The American Cleaning Institute is helping to raise awareness to parents and caregivers about these accidental exposures through the KEY Pledge Campaign. This campaign is all about sharing tips to prevent the accidents from happening in the first place.

One of the best things that you can do as a parent or caregiver is to keep these laundry packets high and out of reach and the sight of young children. Lots of us move laundry packets from their original packs when we get them home and put them into our own storage system. The best thing that you can do is to keep them in their original container so that they are clearly marked as what they are.

The American Cleaning Institute wants you to take the Pledge and make a safer laundry room part of your cleaning routine! By taking this Pledge to keep children safe from the harm that laundry packets pose, you are also entered to win a $2,500 laundry room makeover. Make sure to sign up for the pledge and spread the word about it to your friends that are parents and caregivers of little ones. Together we can make the laundry room a safe place again and educate our children about the purpose for these packets that make our lives easier. The more they know, the safer they will be!
