Terminal Technology: New Digital Ways People are Dealing with Death

Coping with the death of a loved one is one of the hardest things we have to go through in our lives, but what if this could be made easier? Digital technology has advanced so far that experts now believe it’ll help us to keep in touch with our friends and family beyond the grave… And, even though this does sound a little (OK, a lot) spooky, there’s nothing paranormal going on here.

The possibility of staying in touch with someone after they’ve died is no longer a fantasy or something from a sci-fi movie. Instead, by collecting all of the data we’re currently accumulating, we may be able to create a digital version of ourselves, which we can leave behind for our grieving loved ones.

However, this concept is something scientists believe will be available in fifty or sixty years, when enough data has been collected. Until then, here are ways you can remember those nearest and dearest to you or can help them to remember you:

Uploading Memories

With the rise of social media, many of our favorite memories are stored safely on the Internet. This provides you with access to hundreds of images, videos and messages from your loved ones, and without the worry that you may lose them (like you could with a phone or camera, for example). But you can also go one step further, as there’s a tool called Dead Social which allows you to prepare for your death by leaving messages on a number of digital channels.

Recording Messages

One of the best ways of capturing memories is by recording messages and telephone conversations with your loved ones. Whether you’re ringing them with good news or you just want to record a general conversation, there’s a call recording app that will allow you to do just that. When someone’s gone, these conversations are still with you, and listening to them will make it feel as though they’re still in the next room.

Organizing Funerals

With the tagline, “You’re Not Immortal. Deal with It” it may seem as though this next service – Everplans – isn’t taking a sympathetic approach to death. However, this platform has been designed to make sure all the finer details of your funeral or the funeral of someone you love are taken care of. Allowing you to store, share and create all of the information that your family will need to send you off in style, this service can take a lot of the hassle out of organizing funerals. And, even though it’s not something many of us want to think about, it gives you the chance to make your own funeral arrangements so your family doesn’t have to.

From arranging your own funeral to leaving messages behind for your loved ones, there are a number of ways you can immortalize yourself and provide comfort to others in their time of need. And who knows, in the not too distant future, you may even be able to leave behind a digital doppelganger!
