How to Select a Swimsuit That Flatters Your Body Shape

With the weather lovely and warm right now, it’s the perfect time to spend lazy weekends lying by a pool or refreshing mornings cooling off with a dip in the ocean. To do this, you want to have one or more swimsuits on hand that you truly feel comfortable in.

For most women though, selecting swimwear can be stressful and daunting, especially if you have been watching too many videos of Victoria’s Secret models strutting down the runway, or checking out Instagram pics of celebs in tiny bikinis frolicking on holidays.

Happily, though, these days there are swimsuits to flatter every size and shape of any lady, so you can be sure to feel beautiful at the beach or by the pool every day. Read on for some tips and tricks you can use to choose the perfect swimwear for your body shape today. Even bathing suit tops .

Tips for Minimizing Areas You Don’t Love

For starters, if you’re like the majority of ladies out there, you probably have parts of your body that you see as “problem areas” that you’d like to hide or minimize in a swimsuit. If this is the case, think about this as you go searching for your new pair of swimmers.

If, for example, you have a tummy that has more padding than you think you need, it pays to select a full-piece swimsuit that has ruching down the middle to help hide your extra weight in that area. Another tip is to try on swimsuits with plunging necklines, as the focus this puts on your chest will help draw the eye upwards and away from your stomach.

Lots of women are self-conscious about having larger behinds than they wish too. If you’re in this position, search for swimwear that has a simple bottom half, preferably in a solid color, and then a printed, more detailed top. By bringing the focus to your top half, rather than your bottom, you will achieve a more balanced look.

In addition, as you shop, make sure you steer clear of high-cut swimsuits or string bikinis. This is because these types of styles tend to have less material around the buttocks, and can not only end up being too revealing, but also become uncomfortable because they typically provide less coverage than needed.

Shopping for Your Bust Size

Another consideration to make when buying a swimsuit is your bust size. Not only do you obviously want to ensure you’re covered up properly and feel comfortable, with no need to regularly pull at your top to avoid a wardrobe malfunction, but you also want to play up or play down your assets as appropriate.

Women who are smaller in the chest typically have plenty of options when it comes to the style of swimmers they can get away with, because they don’t have to worry much about support or coverage; however, they do typically want to make their bosom look bigger. To help with this, find a swimsuit that has a padded top, and/or various embellishments around your chest, like bows, ruching, and ruffles. In addition, strong patterns in bright colors can also add to the illusion of a bigger bust.

Alternatively, if you have plenty of assets up top, you need to find swimwear which gives you enough support and that won’t cut into you anywhere. Opt for swimsuits with underwire, plus thicker straps, and double-stitched bands, so you get lift, hold, and comfort. It’s best to avoid string bikinis, as these have little coverage or support. Furthermore, to make sure you get the exact right size for your chest, it helps to select a bathing suit that comes in specific cup sizes, instead of the more standard size Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large.

Picking Plus-Size Swimwear

Many ladies who wear larger sizes tend to despair that they can’t find good-quality plus-size bathing suits. Happily though, these days there are more brands designing for this market than ever before, and every type of budget is catered to.

On top of keeping your bust size and potential problem areas in mind when shopping for plus-size swimmers, it helps to stick with colors that have slimming effects. Black, for example, can create the illusion of a slimmer body, while other darker tones, like violet, dark brown and blue, navy and the like can also work well. The best plus-size styles are typically one-pieces, tankinis, or bikinis which use shorts or skirt-like bottoms instead of a standard bikini piece.

When you want to find plus-size swimwear to flatter your body, consider choosing a bathing suit that utilizes color-blocking. Particularly on trend right now, color-blocking occurs when a design is composed of finite blocks of color. You may find that one color is used throughout but in different hues, or that contrasting colors have been chosen. Swimsuits with diagonal, wrapped colors in bold shades can flatter the waistline and elongate the body.
