5 Plumbing Issues That Can Cause You Thousands

Plumbing is one of those things which is present in all homes but not often thought about until it goes wrong. In fact, you probably take it for granted that water will be present when you turn on the tap.

But what do you do when water doesn’t appear or you suddenly spring a leak? Most people have the sense to have an emergency plumber’s number handy, just in case. The plumbing detetctives can certainly help in this regard.

However, there are several plumbing issues which can literally cost you thousands. It is important to be aware of them. This will help you to take preventative action if necessary and hopefully avoid the issues.

  1. Stop Valve Location

When something goes wrong with your plumbing your first instinct should be to shut off the water. This can prevent water from flooding your home. You might be surprised at how many thousands worth of damage can be done in a very short space of time.

Flooded carpets and damaged furniture will almost always need to be replaced.

The simplest way of preventing this is to know where all the stop valves are in your home and the main valve outside your home.

  1. Cover Ups

If you have recently purchased your home you need to look for signs of hastily completed plumbing jobs or roves which have recently been replaced. These could be hiding much bigger issues and it may take you some time to discover a leak. During this time it will continue to lean and can seriously undermine the strength of your walls, the finishing’s and even your foundations.

  1. Clay Sewer Pipes

If your property still has clay sewer pipes you need to be ready to factor in an expensive repair job. Clay naturally erodes over time and your waste products will not be going where you think they are. It can be time consuming and expensive to replace all these pipes. You need to be aware of the before you purchase a house.

  1. Heating / Hot Water System

Another plumbing issue which can cost thousands to repair or replace is your heating and hot water system. If this fails then you are likely to need to replace it and it will almost certainly happen at the worst possible time of year.

It is best to service your system regularly to avid or spot any potential issues before they become a problem. This may not reduce the overall cost but it will allow you time to prepare for it.

  1. Gutters

Finally it is important to be vigilant with your gutters. This is another repair job which can cost thousands. If gutters are not doing their job properly then the water can overflow or back up across the roof. It will find another way down to the ground, even if that is through your home.

Water dripping from the roof can bring your ceiling down and cause a huge amount of damage, keeping your gutters clean and working properly can avoid this issue.
