Simple Ways To Save Your Hair

All opinions are mine and mine alone.

Our hair is one of those things we often sacrifice in order to look good. We bleach it until it’s dry and yellow, only to carry on putting chemicals on it until it’s the perfect shade of pastel pink. And while the end result will make you think that it was all worth it – you really need to start thinking about the effect that all of that preparation has on your hair.

Sure, you see that adverts on tv constantly offering you the best solution on how to care for your hair better – but which ones should you actually listen to? Which ones work? You see, if you go into a professional hair salon and get your hair done – whether that be a cut, colour, or just a wash and blow dry – when they’re washing your hair with at least three different products that smell oh so delicious – ask them what they’re using. They’ll ramble on about the name and all the lush ingredients it includes, but when you ask them where you can buy it from, they tell you it’s not available – you can only use it when done at a hair salon.

There is a ranking. And no matter how many things we are able to get our hands on for our hair – the salons will always have better. Think about it. If they made all their products available to purchase for any gal or guy – we’d never need to spend incredible amounts of money to get a professional to do it.

So rather than spending so much time and money searching online for the best reviews on repairing conditioner, look for how you can avoid all possible damage in the first place, while preventing in it the future.

Here are all the best ways to do that.

Avoid any dying.

Sure, this sounds very boring, but let’s face it – whenever you add a colour on your hair, you are relying on harsh chemicals that coat each strand. And that’s without having to bleach it! Bleach removes the pigmentation in your hair, which is why it goes lighter. But it also removes all the good healthy oils and nutrients too, which is why it goes dry and crispy. And while you should never attempt to do it yourself and always get a professional colour technician – it’s still bad for your hair. Once the pigmentation is gone, it’s gone forever, so the only way you get your natural, original hair colour back is if you wait for it to grow out from the roots again. Fortunately, if you like colours and want to be able to change it up without staying blonde, or brunette forever – you still can. There are now chalks out there that are made specifically for your hair. They come in a whole array of colours and shades – and yes they even work on black hair! All you have to do is dampen your hair (or wherever you want the colour placed) and then essentially just wipe the chalk over that area and let it dry. When you’re done with your day, wash it all out in the shower and watch the colours run into your drain. Then your hair will be back to normal, and you can start a new colour tomorrow.

Get it cut.

It sounds simple, but that’s because it is. If you see that your hair is damaged with waves of split ends that are spreading higher whenever you style your hair – chop them off. This may be the perfect time for you to get a whole new makeover so why just opt for a little trim when you can have a brand new look? You need to think about the kind of hair you have first, so you can get a better idea of what will work for you. For thick hair, you will need to choose something with movement otherwise it will just look artificial and lifeless. Also, whenever you go to a salon for a cut, you need to show the stylist your personality. Tell them what you do for a living or who your inspiration is. Tell them what your favourite music is. The more of a sense and vibe they get from you, the more likely you are to have a cut that compliments your overall theme. Something you need to remember, is that hair grows back. So if you’ve been thinking about going all out and turning it into a pixie cut – don’t wait for the ‘right’ time, because there won’t be one. Just go for it! And hey, if you realise you’ve made a mistake, get a wig. The evil truth is that any celebrity that you idolise for having the most incredible hair – 90% of the time it’s because it’s not really theirs.

Don’t apply heat.

Okay, sometimes you need to here and there. But not every day. If you’ve just got out of the shower after washing your hair and you’re used to blow drying – don’t. Let it air dry. Understandably sometimes you may be in a rush and you know you’re going to have to face the world, so the exceptions are there for important business meetings… But if you have nothing on your agenda and don’t require perfectly straightened or curled hair – leave it be. Now let’s talk about curls, there are so many different tools out there that we can buy that heat up and then provide us with a crisp curl, but did you know that there are tones of tricks out there that can give you many different styles of curls without having to apply any heat whatsoever? Take braiding for example, when you go up to the bathroom before you get into bed, braid your hair. They don’t need to look good or be symmetrical, just do a couple, or however many you can be bothered to do. The bigger the braid – the bigger the curl. The smaller the braid – the tighter the curl. If you tend to have fine, straight hair, then you may want to get it a little damp to begin with so everything sticks together better, otherwise just go straight in. Then go to bed, and by morning you should take out your braids, and be greeted by luscious curls that haven’t caused you any damage.

It’s really that simple. We seem to always get caught up overthinking things and making them a lot more complicated than they actually are. We think about our hair, and are on the lookout for all these strange ingredients that we can rub all over it that will miraculously save it and leave it soft, silky, and goddess-like. But the truth is, the only way you can ever expect to have hair like that, is if you’ve never laid a chemical or hot finger on it since the day that you were born. Or. You shave it all off and start again.

One major reason for wanting to have the best kept hair isn’t so much to do with health – it’s because we constantly compare ourselves to the gorgeous models of Instagram. We all do it. And while it’s near impossible not to, it’s important that you realise that it’s not always honest. Filters, edits, and effects. It takes one stroke of a brush, and the app can make you seem unreal… Because, well, it is.

So stop worrying about having the perfect everything – so what you have a few split ends or grey strands of hair. S*** happens.
