Tips on Cleaning a Carpet

When it comes to carpets in your home, there are many advantages. Carpets provide warmth for your feet, prevent drafts, insulate, provide comfort, and are sound barriers. The advantages surely outweigh the disadvantages of having a carpet in your home. However, when it comes to cleaning the carpet, it is a chore that not of us look forward to. Here are some tips on how to clean your carpet safely and effectively.

If You Can’t Remove A Stain

There may come that dreaded moment where a stain isn’t going anywhere, but it’s not the end of the world! It’s not the ideal situation, but you could resolve your problem and simply cover the stain up until you can have it professionally cleaned. If you’re DIY/crafty like I am, you’ll dig out your tufting gun and make yourself a cute rug to cover the stain for the time being.

Cleaning Your Carpet with Environmentally Friendly Products

One thing that those who own carpets should avoid is commercial carpet cleaning machines. These machines are usually available to rent at grocery stores and rent all. Although they may surface clean your carpet, they do not remove the stains or ground in dirt.

You will find that they are only a waste of your time and money. They often disperse too much water that takes days to dry. So the best thing to do is to avoid using these machines to clean your carpet, if at all possible. Instead, use environmentally-friendly products to clean your carpet as these usually will do a better job without costing you a whole lot of money. Musty odors in a carpet can be removed by using baking soda. All you need to do is sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and give it time to soak in for several hours. After a sufficient time has passed, all you need to do is simply vacuum up the baking soda. Your carpet will now smell fresh as the baking soda will absorb the odors that have been residing in your carpet.

Another common household product that you could use to clean your carpets is a solution of white vinegar and water. Simply mix a solution of equal parts of vinegar and water in a bowl or bucket, apply it to a bottle that has a spray gun and use it to spray on carpet areas that have stains or spots. Rub the area with a hard bristled brush to remove the stain. Allow it to air dry. A vinegar and water solution for carpet cleaning not only removes stains; it also helps to remove pet stains and their odors as well.

These are just two products that are found in most homes that can work as a carpet cleaner. Try them out the next time you want to refresh the carpets in your home.

  1. Good article, I will try this. I have rented the carpet cleaners from the store and they are a pain in the rear. My daughter’s 3 dogs were living in my home the last 2 1/2 years and now that they have moved out I’d like to do a good cleaning.
