Norfolk Island is a beautiful tropical island that is the perfect place to relax for a few weeks or even stop off as part of a tour. Its stunning beaches and beautiful natural scenery make it a popular option for anyone who wants to get back to nature, and its proximity to both Australia and New Zealand makes it an ideal destination for a break.
After being colonized in the 18th century, it was soon turned into a penal colony, and it later became an external territory of Australia. It has an interesting history, which you can find out all about in between exploring the beaches, lush forests and clear waters.
But what should you do when you arrive? Here are some ideas.
Discover Norfolk Island National Park
The National Park on Norfolk Island has amazing natural scenery, making it well worth exploring during your time here. The bird life is particularly diverse, and you may see some other wildlife during your time here. The best way to explore is on foot, and there are many walking trails you can use that take you through the forests and along the coast. You could also head up to the top of Mount Pitt or Mount Bates to enjoy the views.
Walking is a great activity when you stop off on a cruise because it can be arranged so easily. Look on cruise comparison websites and find one that stops at Norfolk Island and you can plan a walk when you arrive.
See the Captain Cook Monument
In 1953, a monument was built at the location where Captain Cook first landed. This is located in the National Park, so you may want to stop off here while you are walking. There are some lovely views to enjoy, and you will even find barbecue facilities.
Relax in the Botanic Gardens
Find out more about the plants of the island by visiting the Botanic Gardens. These are very well cared for and the displays are beautiful. There is also an aviary where you can see green parrots, which are endangered. You will also see the Norfolk Island Pine, which can reach up to nearly 60 metres.
Enjoy Some Water Sports
There are many water sports to enjoy when you stay on Norfolk Island. You could go diving at a wide range of sites, or swimming at Emily Bay, the safest place on the island and one of the most beautiful. There is also many great locations for Snorkelling, with the best found at Cemetery Bay. Slaughter Bay is the place to go for surfing or windsurfing.
Go On a Tour
There are many tours to choose from that will teach you more about the history of the island. They include the Convict Settlement Tour, which will take you around the Kingston area to see the historic buildings. A general tour will take you through all the main sights, including the Melanesian Chapel. There is also the Island Fish Fry, which is the best way to sample the local cuisine.
See It All on Norfolk Island
There is so much to see and do when you arrive on Norfolk Island that it can be difficult to make up your mind. If you are staying for a week or longer, try to do as much as you can. If you are staying for a day trip as part of your cruise, have a think about what you would like to do most, so you can then make the most of your time when you arrive.
