A Wedding in the Works: Big Blunders to Avoid When Buying Bridesmaid Dresses
You’ve asked your sister and you best friends to be bridesmaids at your wedding and everyone has agreed. The planning is well underway. You already have your bridal gown and you have an idea of what you would like your bridesmaids to wear. Don’t fall into the common fatal mistake that some brides-to-de tumble into when choosing their bridesmaids’ attire. Here are some tips to help you avoid big blunders.
Talk It Over with your Bridesmaids
Although it’s down to you to pick a style and color of dress that fits in with the theme of your wedding, it’s still a good idea to sit down with your bridesmaids and ask some questions so that you can be sure everyone will love the dress they’re wearing on the day. For example, some may like strapless dresses, others may not feel comfortable in them; there may be a certain color that one of your friends will absolutely not wear. Don’t panic if everyone’s taste is different, you can keep with a color that everyone agrees on and just change the style of the top slightly, or find a designer that you like and let everyone pick a dress they feel suits them.
Decide on a Budget
If you’re picking out dresses for your bridesmaids, make sure that you chose ones that they can all afford. If you discuss this beforehand, you won’t end up with an embarrassing situation when someone gets an unpleasant surprise. Traditionally the maid of honor helps with the purchasing of the bridesmaid dresses.
Don’t Give Too Many Options
Try to narrow down the look you are going for. If you give each bridesmaid too many options it will just become confusing and stressful. A good place to start is by narrowing down a color that everyone agrees on.
Think About the Length
If you’ve decided on short dresses, make sure that they each have an appropriate hemline. Otherwise, if your bridesmaids are different heights, the taller ones will have shorter dresses than the smaller ones. This will not look good on your wedding photographs.
Avoid Monotony
Times are changing and these days, bridesmaids don’t all have to be wearing exactly the same dress. Take a break from tradition to give your wedding a distinctive flair. Keep the length the same but vary the curt of the top to avoid monotony. Combine straps and strapless dresses. Choose darker colors to complement your wedding gown. Think about colorful print designs or asymmetrical cuts for a unique appearance. Whichever dresses you choose, each one should suit the figure of the bridesmaid that’s wearing it.
Try to stay calm throughout the planning stage. Nothing takes the fun out of shopping for bridesmaid dresses more than stress. Don’t take it all upon yourself; get your maid of honor and your bridesmaids to help out. Remember, it should be fun for them too.
