PPL Power Hour Challenge : One Hour. No Power!

No lights. No television. No smart phones or tablets. No power. For just one hour. Seems easy, right? Well it can be a bit more challenging than you think! But PPL challenged me with Project Envolve to do this and you know me, I can’t not accept a challenge.

So last week, after dinner we went powerless. We put away our phones, and the television was turned off. The kids and I went from room to room turning off every single light, and we all met back in the living room where a mysterious box sat waiting for us.

Inside the box, to help us pass the hour my kids found all sorts of fun stuff I had stashed away all week. A sheet with eyes cut in in, glow sticks, flash lights, glow in the dark face paint and more. We spent the next hour telling spooky stories, painting each others faces and beat boxing while the kids break danced with the glow sticks on the floor. We also did a daylight power hour and played a game and got out glow sticks for that evening. I was sure to keep up with the kids with a quick coffee before the fun!

I was actually shocked at how fast the hour went by. My family and I had a blast, with out using any power! I thought for sure not having my phone would be painful, but I actually totally forgot about my phone, which was so refreshing. It’s crazy to think how  much energy we unconsciously use.

The kids still talk about that  night, so we have decided to make this a weekly challenge and come up with different things to do each time. The following are ideas we plan to use next time.

Make a Fort: Instead of a mystery box, the middle of the living room will be filled with blankets and pillows so we can make a huge fort for all of us to lay in.

Hide & Go Seek: I found a container of glow stick necklaces that everyone will wear, then we will all take turns being the hider. Wearing the necklaces will make finding people easy, unless they hide somewhere their head is hidden!

Charades: I haven’t played this game in forever, and playing it in the dark sounds like so much fun. We are collecting flashlights so we can make a giant spot light on whoever is acting out the word!

Magazine Collages: We have a ton of old magazines laying around, so we want to make family portraits only with the pictures from the magazine. Glow sticks will help us make this even more fun.
