How to Make a Homely Living Space

No matter if you’ve just moved to a new house or whether you just want to re-vamp your current home interiors, there’s nothing worse than having a cold, sterile feeling living room, especially when this will be the place where you will spend the most time in your home. Creating a cosy, warm space that feels welcoming and homely is easy – there are so many things you can do that will make you, your family and any guests you have over feel as comfortable as possible in your living space.

Colour
Colour is so important to how your room will feel and how it will come together. The right colour scheme can transform a room and will evoke the atmosphere you desire. Opt for warm colours such as rich berry shades, toffee colours and bright greens to keep the space from feeling bland. Colours such as icy blues, deep purples and bright whites will create a cold feeling space that will feel less homely when adding furniture into it! Introducing a colour scheme will also allow you to put your own personal stamp on a property and create a space that truly feels like yours. If you’re renting and cannot paint over the walls, you can always create your own coloured walls by hanging large tapestries or paintings that will introduce some colour and depth to the room. Even if you don’t want to paint an entire room, you can plump for a feature wall that will create the same effect but with minimal effort and a less dramatic change.

Soft Furnishings
Soft furnishings are what will make the room seem cosy and warm, no matter the weather outside! Even in summer, it’s nice to have a comfortable living space in which to watch TV or read whenever you like. If you’re keeping the room neutral, soft furnishings will add texture and ensure the space has depth. Think of cushions, blankets, the right sofa, and even curtains. Having sumptuous curtains that drape on the floor creates a frame for the room and will add a layer of privacy which will be essential for creating a comfortable space. Curtains can also bring a huge splash of colour to the room and are a large part of the room that can be customisable. Cushions and blankets will add the comfort factor and are perfect finishing touches.

Furniture
You will need to consider what style of furniture you wish to go for in your home as this will determine the entire feel of the room and will create the character of the space. Plastic and smooth surfaces will create a modern, more clinical feel which will feel less homely and cosy. Introducing wooden furniture such as oak and pine into the room will create a sense of warmth. Choose a soft, deep sofa to create comfortable seating places, and introduce items such as an oak coffee table, pine bookcase or an oak tv unit into the space in order to keep a natural feel to the room. Go for neutral coloured furniture such as cream, white or wooden so that it will contrast nicely against your colour scheme and allow that to stand out.

Finishing Touches
Layers and texture are what make a room feel homelier as this creates the feeling of depth within a room and will be the easiest way to make a cosy space in which to relax in. Don’t forget to accessorise in order to bring the room together – candles, plants and ornaments will add personal touches, and finish off creating a homely space for you enjoy with friends and family. If you’re feeling fancy, then some custom home window shades are recommended.
