Arid Adventures: How to Enjoy Safe Trekking in the Desert

If you’ve haven’t spent time much time exploring the California desert, what in the world are you waiting for? Despite their outwardly desolate appearance, the deserts around Palm Springs and Indian Wells are practically teeming with life for those who know how to look. Of course, one must make certain preparations before trekking into an inhospitable environment. Read on, and you’ll know all about the right way to enjoy a desert hike.

Desert safety basics

Hydrate before you go. Gatorade and other electrolyte-rich beverages are a better bet than plain water for your pre-hike hydration. Tote water with you, and take frequent sips even if you don’t feel thirsty. In the heat of the arid California desert, you will sweat and may not notice when your bodily systems require water, explains The Desert Sun.

Plan to enjoy your desert hike early in the day. Dawn is a nice time to embark. Never start a desert hike when the sun is high in the sky. Before you head out for your early morning desert hike, tell at least one other person where you are going and when you expect to return. When you get back to your hotel, let them know. In a place where outdoor temperatures easily exceed 110 degrees, it’s extra imperative to keep others informed as to your whereabouts.

Whilst hiking the desert, take advantage of every opportunity to cool down. Hike more slowly than usual, and take a break anytime you find a source of shade. Look for Joshua trees to find shade and relative coolness. While you are exploring the desert, try to always inhale and exhale through your nose. This technique will help to keep your mouth moist and comfortable. A wet handkerchief draped around the back of your neck may provide a bit of welcomed heat relief.

Dress for the occasion

Shorts that are made of moisture-wicking fabrics are fine, but be sure to lavishly apply sunscreen to all exposed leg areas. Lighter colored garments are preferable, and always wear a long-sleeved shirt, remind experienced desert hiking gurus at The Clyme magazine.

Thick socks and hiking boots are a must on any desert expedition. Save your strappy summer sandals for hanging around the swimming pool at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort and Spa by Marriott after your California desert adventure.

Desert trek must-knows

Take a fully charged cell phone with you, and don’t waste battery time listening to music as you hike. If the weather becomes insanely hot, don’t be afraid to put off your trek until another day. Tote along more water and food than you think you will need. A larger fluid supply may slow you slightly, but the delay is definitely better than being caught in the desert without enough water.

Prepare properly, know where you’re going, take the proper provisions, tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back, and you can have a wonderful adventure trekking the desert.
