What To Look For When Buying Your Kids First Drone
Drones are increasingly popular and chances are your kids are probably already asking for them. Depending on your child’s age, a drone could be an awesome toy as well as a great tool for learning responsibility.
Features To Look For
There are some basic features to consider when purchasing your child’s first drone.
These will make or break your child’s experience and save you possible headaches down the road.
Battery
One of the most important features to consider is the battery life on these toy drones.
They usually range from 5-8 minutes on entry level drones however, as you get into more expensive drones these can last up to 30 minutes.
There is usually a trade off however, the ones that don’t last as long usually don’t take as long to charge.
Most of the batteries take 1-2 hours to charge however, some smaller ones only take 30 minutes.
This may seem like an awful lot of work for just a few minutes of fun, this is why you should invest in extra batteries at the time you purchase the drone.
Batteries are relatively cheap and this will limit your downtime between flights.
Just make sure to follow the recommended resting times.
Range
Another important factor to consider when looking at drones.
They usually average 50-100 meters on beginner drones, however, more expensive models can go several miles.
If you have a younger child you may want to opt for a drone on the shorter end of the range spectrum. Though as they get older they may want a little more room to stretch their wings so to speak.
It is important to follow these recommended ranges as when you fly outside of them, you risk losing your drone.
It could lose contact with the transmitter in the remote control and some will fly off on their own and either get lost or crash into something.
Some higher end models will have alarms when you are reaching an unsafe distance but it is a good idea to get your bearings with some fixed objects to help you stay safe.
Other Features To Consider
There are several other features to consider besides these two main that determine most of the flying abilities.
Camera
Of course as your kids get older they will probably want to check out the pictures or videos they can create from the sky with these drones.
Some have cameras and some don’t, there will be trade offs depending on your budget.
Some will also have the ability for FPV, which stands for first person view.
This allows your child to view live footage of what the drone is actually seeing in real time.
Flying Modes
As you get into higher end drones they will come with more advanced flying technologies that will help your kid learn how to fly the drone faster.
Things like headless flying mode, altitude hold, and return home features will help new pilots learn how to fly better, faster.
Be sure to do your homework on whatever drone you are looking at and think about which features are most important to you.
