It’s easy for your skin to look great in summer when you’re absorbing vitamin D from the sun’s rays and everything’s looking a little brighter, shiner and more optimistic. It’s clear to see, however, that the summer has well and truly gone and the fall is here whether we want it or not. It’s not all bad, of course, we’ve got pumpkin spice lattes and a whole lot of cool fashion trends to look forward to in the coming season but there’s no use denying that the sharp decline in temperature is going to wreak havoc with your skin.
The colder, drier weather that tends to come with the fall means that the moisture is likely to be sucked from your skin even before it’s subjected to the rigors of indoor heating and extreme fluctuations in temperature as you go from the cold air outdoors to the warm air inside. The coming of the fall is tough on your skin, but you’re making life even harder for it with these cardinal sins of skincare.
Comfort eating
It’s oh-so-tempting to fall into bad eating habits when the long nights draw in and a combination of Seasonal Affective Disorder and your hibernation instinct bombards you with a temptation to pull the duvet over your head and binge on junk food. This can lead your skin to become greasy and prone to spots which can lead to poor self-image which can only exacerbate your SAD.
Not exercising
Getting the motivation to hit the gym or go for a run in the morning is undeniably tough when the morning skies are pitch black and speckled with raindrops. Exercise, however, can not only give your mood a much needed boost but improve your skin by increasing your blood’s ability to carry essential nutrients to the skin. Not cleansing properly
When the season is doing its best to dull your skin, the best way to help it is by not cleansing properly. Forgetting to cleanse regularly can prevent your skin from forming new cells which causes it to grow dull and lifeless.
Forgetting SPF protection
In gloriously hot, sunny days it’s probably obvious that you need to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, but few people fully realize the importance of SPF in cold weather. You may not feel the effects of the sun on cold, bright days but your skin is still getting the damage from harmful UV rays.
Not drinking enough water
Coffee and tea may be the order of the day in cold weather but it’s still important to drink lots of water and keep your skin hydrated so that it can remain supple and glowing.
Using petroleum based oils
Make sure that your skincare regime consists of products that use natural plant based oils rather than oils that are petroleum based. Petroleum based oils can prevent the screen from breathing which may lead to redness, inflammation and outbreaks of spots.
Steer clear of these common pitfalls and you’ll enjoy gorgeous, radiant glowing skin well into the winter.
