Emergencies Happen:  5 Outstanding Items That Can Help You be Better Prepared

No matter how carefully you tread through life, a disaster may always be lurking just around the corner, waiting to strike at the most inconvenient moment. But if you take the needed steps to prepare for the unspeakable, there is no reason to fear, knowing that you’ve upped your chances of saving yourself to the very maximum. The following 5 items can be used exactly for that purpose:

  1. Tincture of iodine

A tincture of iodine should be an integral part of every survival kit. Its main use is to disinfect the wounded area, since it effectively kills off viruses and bacteria. Do not drink it, however; it’s only meant to be used on the surface of the skin. Also, bear in mind it won’t save you from certain types of parasites such as Giardia.

  1. Solar charger

This nifty little gadget is a life-saver if you’re planning to go camping or traveling in the wild. You never know when one of your electronic devices might fail you, or you simply leave it on for too long and deplete its battery reserves. Obviously, a solar charger won’t be of much use to you during the night, so make sure to get the most out of daylight by charging your devices while you still can. After all, you don’t want to find yourself in a situation when you need to call for help and your cellphone isn’t working, right?

  1. Tourniquet

If you (or one of your friends) ever find yourself in a serious accident involving blood loss, you need to find a way to stop bleeding too much and get to the hospital as soon as possible, lest you risk passing out from losing too much blood. A tourniquet will do a much better job at it than simply covering up the wound with a cloth and pressing as hard as you can. Still, bear in mind that improvised tourniquets have around a 75% failure rate, so they’re not the best tool for the job. In an ideal scenario, you should have a professional solution nearby such as OMNA, since it’s much more sturdy and reliable.

  1. Portable defibrillator

With aging, heart attacks tend to become increasingly more common. Calling 911 and having someone nearby who can perform first aid procedures will significantly raise your chances of surviving. But what if no hospitals are nearby and the nearest one requires at least a one-hour drive to get to? In cases such as these, a portable defibrillator could very well mean the difference between life and death.

  1. Face mask

In the event of a fire or during gas leakage, breathing the air without some kind of a filter can be very dangerous to your health. But with the help of a face mask, your lungs will be protected. They’re also of great use to prevent the spreading of contagious diseases either by you or by others.

Conclusion

Hopefully, we’ve been able to give you some ideas on how to prepare for some of the unfortunate events that sometimes enter our lives and shake things up. You know what they say: hope for the best, but prepare for the worst!
