Why is Vaginal Rejuvenation All the Rage?
The global cosmetic surgery market is booming, with the industry expected to be worth $31.97 billion by the end of 2023. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the most popular procedures are liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, eyelid surgery, and breast lift. However, one procedure that is fast growing in popularity, is that of vaginal rejuvenation. It may seem a little surprising to some people, but yes, there is such a thing as labiaplasty – a plastic surgery procedure to reduce the size of the vaginal lips. Research indicates that vaginal surgery is “the world’s fastest-growing cosmetic procedure.” Social factors such as the influence of social media and the film industry, new technological innovations and commonly sought procedures having a solid reputation for safety, have led men and women to turn to their surgeons for issues they cannot change themselves.
Reasons for Vaginal Rejuvenation
The media erroneously portrays vaginal rejuvenation, or labiaplasty, as a procedure sought by women seeking a ‘Barbie’ look. In fact, labiaplasties are often sought out because of pain. Excess skin can cause pinching and chaffing and sometimes, the formation of sores. The issue can be particularly difficult for those practicing sports such as horse riding or cycling, in which skin tissue can be compressed. Evidently, some women opt for this procedure for purely aesthetic reasons. Technically, labiaplasties are truly necessary in a small number of cases, since labia (vaginal ‘folds’) vary in size and shape from individual to individual.
Vaginal Rejuvenation is an Outpatient Treatment
Despite making such a big difference in terms of appearance, labia reduction surgery is actually minor compared to other surgeries. Usually, it is performed on an outpatient basis. After surgery, women feel a little discomfort, which, along with swelling, might take two weeks at most to subside. Interestingly, vaginal rejuvenation doesn’t always involve removing excess skin; sometimes, fat is grafted from other areas in the body and injected into the area to enhance or reshape the labia majora (the outer ‘folds’ of the vagina).
Are You a Good Candidate for this Procedure?
An experienced plastic surgeon will be able to give you honest advice regarding whether or not a labiaplasty is appropriate. It is important to have realistic expectations from the outset, and to discuss other options such as thermal energy therapy, which treats the inner and outer labia, stimulating collagen growth. In addition to improving appearance, this procedure also enhances vaginal tightness. Laser is also used successfully for tightening. Be sure to discuss laser treatment in detail with your doctor, as it can cause some painful vaginal rejuvenation side effects.
Sometimes, vaginal surgery is a matter of medical necessity. Clearly, however, the popularity of the procedure indicates that many women are also choosing it to achieve a smoother appearance. If you are considering surgery, a visit to your surgeon as well as to a therapist can be useful, to make sure you know exactly what your options and aims are.
