Single Malt Simplicity: Glenlivet is a Great Choice for Your Cabinet
If you’re shopping for a solid single malt to add to your liquor cabinet, look no further than the Glenlivet 12-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This exceptionally popular whisky can be found in a surprising number of outlets, making it accessible to most people, both in flavor and availability. Glenlivet holds a special place among Scottish distilleries and Scotch drinkers alike for its approachable flavor and affordable price.
Glenlivet’s colorful past
Glenlivet’s distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland is the oldest legal distillery in Glenlivet parish.
Even before it was legal, Glenlivet whisky had made its name known. So much so, that when King George IV arrived in Scotland for a visit and asked to try Glenlivet’s famous whisky, even though it remained illegal at this point. Within two years, a change of legislation meant that the production of whisky was now permitted with a license. However, George Smith’s interest in changing the Glenlivet distillery from an illicit operation to a licensed distillery did not go over well with neighboring illegal distilleries. In fact, Smith’s life and the safety of his distillery were even threatened by these other operations.
Glenlivet’s flavor
The Glenlivet 12 is an entry-level bottling in the brand’s line. This 12-year-old is bottled at 40% abv and has a surprisingly deep, gold color with a coppery tinge. The Glenlivet 12’s nose is sharp, with the scent of green apples and dry grass, with overtones of honey and vanilla. This makes it sweet and rounded but still has an edge.
Glenlivet 12 is aged in barrels that held Bourbon, which pulls the sweetness into the flavor so that the whisky is part in the malty, honey-flavored range while having an equally corn syrup, cereal-sweet zone.
This oaty, warm, and spicy whisky has a lengthy finish with an easy wind-down. It’s a pretty steady finish with minimal warmth. The Glenlivet 12 is a guaranteed good buy when it comes to single malt scotch. It’s fine to drink neat but is also affordable enough to put it on ice in the warmer months without feeling guilty about watering it down.
Why it should be part of your liquor cabinet
Like wine, the world of whisky can be overwhelming. There are literally hundreds of varieties of whisky (and whiskey—that ‘E’ is important) and each has their own unique flavour profile. This can make choosing your first single malt intimidating, especially if you’re ever been in the presence of a whisky snob attempting to educate you on what you need to look for in a whisky.
However, single malts can be surprisingly approachable and you don’t need to know everything there is about whisky and its history to enjoy a good dram of single malt.
The Glenlivet 12 is a clean, easy-drinking whisky that tastes exactly like single malt should. It’s spiciness and warmth mean that it will taste smooth on the way down; with just enough of a kick to remind you it’s a Speyside scotch. It won’t intimidate newcomers to whisky and it doesn’t disappoint seasoned whisky drinkers either, making it a perfect addition to your liquor cabinet.
