A History of Women’s Hairstyles

When did the history of hair and hairstyles start? Perhaps that happened the day when Eva bite an apple… because, from that moment on, she started to get worried about her look and, first of all, she started to arrange her hair… Since the day women have begun to experiment with their hair, hairstyles and haircuts and I know… no, I’m sure (and I hope you do as well!) these experiments never end!

Hairstyles, as well as fashion trends, come and go. Women`s hairstyles have changed throughout the ages, but perhaps you`ve noticed that history has remained the greatest hairstyles and many of them continue to be in demand among ladies today. Don`t forget that different historical hairstyles are an unlimited source of inspiration for hairstyle fashion in the present.

It’s really useful to look at different periods of hair history and examine the most memorable ways of hair styling. I think no one should disagree that today our celebrities often reincarnate the classic hairstyles of the past and in such a way they inspire us to try some renovated hairstyles where past and present are mixed together. That’s rather interesting and even exciting! Well, let’s look at the most iconic examples from various periods of hair history and some of the updated hairstyles they’ve inspired.

Greek Hairstyle Ideas

Ancient Greece… Its hairstyles are wonderful and timeless. The Greek knot… the Greek bun… They never go out of hairstyle. In ancient Greece, the hair of women was long and commonly pulled back into a chignon. A lot of women dyed their hair red with henna and sprinkled it with gold powder. They could also add some fresh flower to their hair. A bit later, in the 5th century, the Greek women were allowed to cut their hair. Since then it was often fastened by headbands or diadems. During Hellenistic times women liked waving and curling their hair artificially. Well, these tendencies are still popular among modern girls.

Greek Tiara Hairstyle

The women who like to wear simple hair find this hairstyle the most suitable and versatile. It fits any occasion and looks gorgeous! That’s amazing! Even if you`ve got a medium length hair you can wear a low slung bun and add a splendid tiara. So you`re ready to shine!

Helen`s Braid

It is one more simple hair idea from the Greek women! The main reason to style it is the fact that it can be worn for any occasion by any lady. One-sided braid blended with a loose bun can improve your look immediately and give more confidence while walking around.

Victorian Voluminous Updo

It may seem a bit whimsical, but Victorian hairstyles are still currently relevant now. Well, when it comes to the history of this hair era, it should be noted that this period helped the ladies make their hair more visible. At that exact time, the hair coverings grew smaller and hairstyles began to include different types of ornamentation like flowers, jewels, ribbon, ropes of pearls and so on.

Looped Style

It’s no secret that Victorian hairstyles are often recreated now because of their uniqueness and simplicity. It doesn`t require a lot of effort to arrange the hair in updo collected at the back of the head and compliment it by one or more loops of hair leading from the front of the hair to this arrangement at the back.

Queen Victoria`s Hair Idea

Princess and later Queen Victoria was famous for her new way of hair styling that is used by many modern girls in the present. It may seem really simple, but at the same time, it looks elegant and cute! Just sport some curls at the side of the face and create volume in the hair at the front of the head. Although, this cool hairstyle can be added by some lovely ornament. Well, that’s all!

Gibson Girl Hairstyle

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the Gibson Girl appeared in the hair fashion world. This type of women was much more independent and sporty compared to the Victorian ladies and that’s why their hairstyles were also much looser and carefree-looking. But these trends are popular today no less than Victorian ones. All because of their effortlessness and gracefulness.

Gatsby Hairstyles

The Gatsby hairstyles or Roaring Twenties were emerging after the WWI and before The Great Depression of 1929. It was the era of bob hairstyle and its various transformations, many of which are still used by the women of the 21st century.

Soft Finger Waves

Traditional finger waves! What can be more classic and modern than soft structured finger waves! The look when waves framing the face is perfect for some special events as well as for everyday routine.

Textured Bob

Textured bob remains a classic look of 20s hair to this day. A lot of girls adore this retro hairstyle and don`t think that it might be the favorite hairstyle of their great-grandmothers!

This selection of the greatest hairstyles from different periods proves how past and present inseparable are! By the way, when picking out these wonderful styles, we wanted to show you that past can be an infinite source of hair ideas and inspiration in the present. Don`t forget that and use them to improve your look!
