6 Techniques to Help Restore the Quality of Your Skin
Our skin’s the biggest organ on our body and it’s important that we take care of it. Healthy skin is generally an indicator of overall health and supple, moisturized skin keeps us looking younger, longer. Let’s look at some easy ways to help restore the quality of your skin, including product recommendations and simple lifestyle changes.
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
One of the best things you can do to restore the quality of your skin is moisturize. Most dermatologists recommend using a moisturizer every morning with an SPF of at least 50 before your makeup, and a nightly moisturizer. But don’t worry, your lotion doesn’t have to be anything fancy. While some creams might boast complex ingredients and large claims, the key thing is to moisturize regularly, especially in the summer.
If you want to give your skin an extra boost, try a collagen face mask or hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occuring compound in the human body that helps keep our skin plump and youthful.
Protect Yourself from the Sun
The other commandment in skin care is sun protection. As mentioned, use SPF 50 or more every day to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Even if you don’t plan to be outside, you are still exposed to the sun through windows, driving, and running errands for 10 minutes here and 5 minutes there. That sun exposure adds up, and UVB and UVA rays are to thank for premature aging, fine lines, and wrinkles.
Skip the Drinks
Alcohol is very dehydrating and while a few drinks here and there might not have a major effect on your skin, perpetually binge drinking can dehydrate your skin and cause dull, damaged, and dry skin. GQ did a whole article on how bad drinking is for your skin, and here’s what they have to say:
- Your liver metabolizes alcohol and releases a toxic byproduct that affects your body tissue
- Alcohol is inflammatory, which can cause skin redness
- It dilates the pores of the skin, which leads to blackheads and whiteheads
If you or someone you love needs help getting or staying sober, don’t be afraid to seek rehabilitation services.
Hydrate
Keeping your skin hydrated is important and one way to do that is to keep your whole body hydrated! Drinking lots of water will help restore the quality of your skin, give you more energy, and help you achieve that youthful glow. Health experts recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces of water every day.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
Another foolproof way to get glowing skin is to get a good night’s sleep. During sleep, our bodies regenerate cells and build up our strength for the next day. Sleeping at least 8 hours a night will help your skin stay supple and your body fully functioning. Pro tip: Use a silk pillowcase to really prevent wrinkles and fine lines.
Use Gentle Cleansers
Many common cleansers are actually pretty bad for our skin. They contain harmful chemicals that strip our skin’s natural oils. These cleansers are both gentle and hydrating.
Taking care of your skin is key to maintaining a youthful, healthy appearance.
