Why Fall is the Best Time to Begin a New Self-Care Regimen
Fall is a season of change. The leaves changes color, the temperature gets colder, the fashion takes on a more visibly plaid aesthetic, and the brisk air invigorates everyone to head to pumpkin patches, drink apple cider and enjoy the changing scenery.
But fall isn’t just a time of change for the weather; it’s also an ideal time to begin some change in your own life. Here’s why fall is the best time to begin a new self-care regimen.
Fall Has a More Ideal Temperature
Everyone loves summer, but the summer months can provide high temperatures and humidity levels that don’t exactly motivate you to make big changes, specifically to your health. If you’re interested in making some self-care changes around health and fitness, the cool fall temperatures lend themselves to getting outside and getting moving.
Take advantage of the cooler temperatures to take walks outside, either alone or with family and friends. Consider starting a walking group with friends and meeting up a few times a week for some walking and talking. The exercise will improve your fitness levels, and the social company will nourish you emotionally and mentally.
The Pace of Life Slows Down in the Fall
Fall is “back-to-school” season, so when the leaves start changing, the kiddos also head back to school, which frees up a lot of time for parents. With the kids out of the house and in school during normal hours, your schedule may open up quite a bit, offering you more time to focus on your own health and self-care.
Use this time to your advantage by picking up an activity or practice you’ve always wanted to try. A great place to start is by making a “Happiness List” – write down a list of all the things that make you happy, and that you truly enjoy. Once you have your list, pick out a few items that you can work on incorporating into your daily routine. With more time on your hands, you owe it to yourself to spend it in a way that you enjoy.
You can also use this time for some pampering, such as getting a massage, getting your nails done, or even just catching up on your beauty sleep. Any way you prefer to do it, self-care is important, and the fall season marks a perfect time to re-prioritize it in your life.
Fall Provides a Nice Respite Before the Holidays
Before the craziness of the holidays, take some time for yourself. Fall marks a nice break between the busy summer months, which are often filled with traveling, and the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Treat the fall season as a period of well-deserved downtime before the spending, shopping and busyness of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Years kick in.
Use this time to re-focus on family. Plan some day trips to enjoy the weather and beautiful fall scenery. Go on some new adventures together. Start a new tradition. The possibilities for self-care with family are endless.
New Seasonal Food & Drink Options
With the change in seasons comes a bevy of new seasonal food and drink options in stores and your local farmer’s market. Practice self-care by cooking up a healthy meal for you and your family, full of squash, apples, beets or cranberries. Take advantage of new delicious seasonal options – you may also save a few bucks by purchasing “in-season” produce at your local store!
Fall also offers fun new drink options to try, such as spiked apple cider and pumpkin spice beer. Just make sure you try these new drinks in moderation. If you feel that you may be consuming too many alcoholic beverages, there are options available for help, and a variety of approaches of rehab facilities you can explore.
Remember, fall is the ideal season for self-care. And if you need to achieve that self-care with the help of a professional, there’s no time like the present to do so.
