Mix and Match: 5 Basic Fashion Principles to Master the Art of Mixing Colors
There is no doubt about it. Creating that perfect look takes creativity, flair, and above all else, an understanding of how to mix colors effectively. Style and design are subjective, but colors are not. There is a right and a wrong way to mix color and understanding the principles behind colour interaction is key for creating a flawless outfit.
Here are 5 basic fashion principles to help you master the art of mixing colors. Armed with these rules, you can head to SSENSE, the international fashion platform, and begin crafting your own outfits to enhance your wardrobe.
Monochromatic
The easiest principle to create a stunning and sophisticated outfit, it by employing a monochromatic scheme. This involves choosing pieces of the same colour but with differing shades. For example, a deep yellow top, with a softer lemon coloured skirt and beige shoes. Different shades of the same colour prevent the outfit from getting too boring, but at the same time, isn’t too loud.
Complementary Colors
Each primary color has a complementary color attributed to it. Remember those color wheels on the wall in art class? Those are the same wheels that demonstrate what colors complement each other.
For example, Orange sits opposite blue on the wheel. This means blues compliment oranges. Similarly, purples and violets compliment yellows, and reds compliment greens.
Analogous Colors
In small quantities, analogous colors also complement each other. These are the colors adjacent (only in the clockwise direction) to the color on the color wheel.
For example, red sits alongside orange on the color wheel. This means you can pair a small amount of orange with a red outfit. Similarly, yellow sits alongside green, meaning you can do the same with those two colors.
If in Doubt, Got for a Neutral Colored Bottom
If you are in a rush or are unsure of where to go, a neutral coloured bottom like beige, black, white, or denim will complement almost any colored top. It may sound simple, but it is effective. Some of the most elegant and sleek outfits in my wardrobe consist of a primary-colored top and a pair of beige pants.
Dealing with Browns and Greys
Browns and greys are some of the most difficult colors to deal with. They are sort of neutral, but not neutral enough to go with absolutely any other color.
The best way to handle browns and greys, it to determine if they are warm or cool. If the colour scheme is warm, then you can match it with other warm colours like orange, yellow, and red. A fall ensemble of a brown sweater with an orange skirt and red shoes works, for example. If the colour is cooler, match it with other cool colors like blues or purples. A cooler brown could go with a dark blue top with a light blue scarf or headband, for example.
Bear in mind, that colour calamities usually happen when we are in a hurry and we don’t have time to think about the principles. Plan your outfits ahead of time to ensure your colour pairings are on point and your outfits are modern and chic.
