5 Things That Will Happen When You Undergo Rhinoplasty Surgery

You’ve probably considered having rhinoplasty at one point in your life. Who wouldn’t want to have an attractive nose, especially in this age of Instagram and social media where looks can play an important role in personal branding?

However, a nose job is a big decision to undertake and you should be well-informed of the things that are likely to happen once you go under the knife with a licensed surgeon. Aside from the rhinoplasty cost, make sure you are aware of what you are dealing with – here are five things you can expect when you undergo rhinoplasty surgery.

Swelling

Since you’ve just undertaken surgery, you can expect some swelling and bruising near your eyes. It will take at least three days for the swelling to subside and the scars to heal.  When resting, it’s good to support your head with pillows to help reduce the swelling. You can also expect some instances of nosebleed in the initial days.

Breathing

It will be a bit challenging for you to breathe normally through your nose after the surgery because you’ll have dressings inserted in both of your nostrils and there will be a splint above your nose held by tape. So get used to breathing through your mouth for a short while. Also, avoid sneezing hard and avoid dusty places so that your nose won’t be irritated.

Less Physical Activities

During the recovery stage (give at least three full months), you need to avoid sports and strenuous activities to avoid injuring your delicate remodeled nose. Avoid crowded places because people can easily bump into you.

This would mean avoiding swimming as well because there is a good chance your nose could get hit at some point because it is crowded. You should also avoid actions that have too much movement, such as laughing and brushing your teeth vigorously. If you wear glasses, avoid placing it on your nose for the early part of the recovery period.

You can only do it once

Once you have decided to do rhinoplasty, that’s it. You cannot do this repeatedly because your nose has already undergone surgery and you’ll risk permanent scarring and nose deformity. So don’t get addicted to cosmetic surgery like rhinoplasty. Plan it well the first time with your surgeon and be content and happy with the results.

Goodbye alcohol and medication

One of the first things your surgeon will ask before agreeing to let you have rhinoplasty is whether you are ready and willing to give up alcohol and medication to increase the success rate of the surgery. The reason is that alcohol thins your blood and can make it hard for bleeding to stop in case it happens during the surgery. In addition, alcohol dries out the skin which can prevent the surgeon from stitching your skin well and so there is a big chance of scarring to happen. Taking medication such as aspirin and Vitamin E must also stop to avoid bleeding.

Undertaking rhinoplasty is a serious decision and you should carefully consider the costs, advantages, and disadvantages of going under the knife. Remember to plan it out well with your surgeon and get your family and friends on your side for emotional support.
