Popular wedding flowers by season:
Winter
Not as many brides what to get married in December or January as they do in May or June. But a winter wedding is an opportunity to show how unique and original you and your future husband are.
What better way to express your individuality than to have a winter wedding with white flowers? You can use the following as the “main” flower and others as accents to complement your colors.
Camellias – a layered white flower that is in season from early fall to the end of December. These flowers add texture to any bouquet and with some deep reds or dusty blue flowers, or whatever your colors are, here and there, these flowers will be a show stopper.
Anemones – these are also white flowers, but the centers are black, making them perfect for a winter wedding that is more elegant than casual. When the bridesmaids wear black cocktail dresses or long black evening gowns, these flowers are the perfect accompaniment without any accent flowers or other colors.
Ranunculus – another winter white flower, this one has many petals tightly wound around a small black dot of a center. It doesn’t need much added to it to make a beautiful bouquet or boutonniere as the design and texture are enough to hold anyone’s attention.
They are paper thin and attractive on their own, but a little greenery or a few sprigs of baby’s breath and the wedding flowers are complete.
Spring
The most popular time for weddings, and the blooms are plentiful. There are so many to choose from, each as gorgeous as the next.
Anemones – these are actually wildflowers and look as if they have a gem or jewel in the center. The flowers are known for their petals that are stretched out to the sides and come in mostly two-tone colors of white with pink or light purple edges. They have a very short bloom time and only last a few days after they have been cut from the plants.
Garden Roses – these are different than typical roses because they have more petals that are tightly coiled together. They are one of the most popular wedding flowers in the world and are sometimes referred to as David Austin Roses named for the man who originally bred this flower.
The colors of garden roses range from white and ivory to five different shades of pink and dark red. They are perfect for any type of wedding bouquet and boutonnieres.
Tulips – these are another perfect wedding flower as they bloom early spring and are much hardier and long lasting than many of the other spring flowers.
They come in a wide variety of colors from deep purples to light yellows. They will add height and depth to any bouquet and/or table centerpiece.
Summer
Summer is not as popular for weddings as the other seasons due to the heat. Even if you are planning an all indoor wedding, there are always going to be concerns over the heat and outdoor photos.
Sunflowers – nothing says summer like sunflowers. These are large and take up a lot of space in a bouquet and on the table. They can be beautiful when paired with a medium sized white carnation or other off-white flowers.
Calla lilies – these are elegant cone shaped flowers that are mostly grown white, but there are other colors that would brighten up any summer wedding. Deep purples and stripes of black and brown on yellow are all dramatic colors of lilies and will accent any color themed wedding nicely.
Daisies – these are simple and elegant at the same time. The traditional white petals and yellow centers are perfect for a multicolored wedding, but there are other colors of daisies one can purchase.
Autumn
Autumn or fall weddings are becoming more and more popular around the country because of the cooler weather and the beautiful colors of flowers.
Chrysanthemum – these are larger pom or fluffy style blooms and come in several shades. They are perfect for fall weddings in green, burnt orange, deep purples and a few lighter colors.
Mix in some green, red, and/or orange leaves and your bouquet will be stunning as well as match the outdoors.
Leucadendron – this is a unique fall type of flower as it is part of a bush with long, upward facing leaves and flower petals to match. The blooms come in different shades of reds and would look great mixed with some white flowers or deep purple blooms.
Yarrow – this is another fall favorite flower and has a large bloom made up of several smaller flowers tightly bunched together. The colors range across the rainbow so there are plenty to choose from to make a brilliant autumn bouquet for the bride and her bridesmaids. They are a little large to use as a boutonniere, unless cut in half or even thirds.
When planning your wedding flowers, think of the date first. There is no rule that says you can’t mix and match your wedding flowers from different seasons. The only thing that would stop you is the availability of seasonal flowers. And you don’t have to match your dresses and colors, look to mix things up when it comes to flowers.
