Meal on Demand: 9 Portable Snacks That Don’t Require a Fridge
Nutrition is important when you’re camping and engaging in high levels of activity. You need not just meals, but snacks for those times when you need something to keep you going. It may seem difficult to carry all that food when you have to pack light and you don’t have access to a fridge. However, there’s lots of dried food for campers on the market and lots of tasty snacks which don’t require refrigeration. Let’s look at some of them.
Cheese products
It may not be the real thing but cheese substitutes are helpful when there’s no fridge available. If you must have your nachos, products like Cheese Whiz and Velveeta are camper-friendly options.
Bread and butter
Freshly-baked bread will last for quite a long time. And believe it or not, butter doesn’t need to be refrigerated so you have the perfect snack for all the members of your party. Just one note: if it’s really hot outside, the butter will melt and get quite messy so you need to ensure it properly sealed.
Muffins
If you just want something to grab and go, why not bake a batch of muffins right before your trip? You get to choose the exact flavours you want so there’s no chance you’ll be disappointed. They’ll easily last about five days.
Trail mix
Gather your favourite healthy ingredients and toss them together in an airtight container for the perfect on-the-go snack. Nuts, dried fruit, seeds, grains and even some savoury spices can be included. Try combining almonds, dried cherries and dark chocolate chips with sea salt and cinnamon or almonds, cashews, peanuts, walnuts and raisins.
Salsa in a jar
This won’t taste like the homemade thing but it will still be a delicious option when you’re desperately in need of something to munch on after a hike. Don’t forget to pack your favourite tortilla chips.
Energy bars
There’s a reason snack and energy bars are so popular with campers and hikers. They’re small and lightweight but also nutritious (if you pick the right ones). Look for bars packed with protein and fiber. They’ll give you the boost you need as your hike draws to a close or your finally finish erecting your tent.
Fresh fruits
You may be used to storing your fruits in the refrigerator but some of them travel quite well. Oranges, bananas, mangoes and apples should be fine for a few days once you buy them when they’re firm. You’ll need to eat them once you cut them because they won’t last very long after.
Dry cereal
What can be an easier snack to get? If you pack small packets, everyone can get their favourite in a small portion. Even if you usually have your cereal with milk, you’ll soon realize that many types are great dry.
Fruit cups
The kids in your group are sure to love these but maybe the adults will as well. These individually portioned cups are tasty and many now come in fruit juice instead of sugary heavy syrup.
When you first begin to think about the snacks you’ll pack, it may seem like there are not that many options. However, as you can see, there are many healthy and exciting foods which don’t require refrigeration. Grab your favourites for your next camping trip.
