3 Tell-Tale Signs Your Roof Should be Repaired or Replaced

As every homeowner knows, the roof is one of the most essential components of the house. Problems with the roof quickly become problems that affect your entire home, so it is important to make sure that your roof is in good shape.

Unfortunately, by the time you notice that your roof is leaking, or that insufficient ventilation is causing rot to set in, there’s a good chance the damagewill already be pretty advanced. So what should homeowners look out for if they want to be proactive about ensuring that their roof system is watertight and operating as it should?

Here are a few warning signs to look out for if you want to protect the comfort, value, and structural integrity of your house.

Mould

Mould is a common problem in older houses, and tends to manifest itself first as little patches of black in the corners where walls meet. Mould indicates that moisture and vapour are getting trapped inside the house, which in turn suggests that your attic isn’t properly ventilating.

If you start to notice mould in the rooms of your house, the first thing you should do is look at the state of your attic. In most cases, the mould is spreading from a damp attic that may have been improperly insulated or lacks the necessary ventilation.

The good news is that ventilation problems are relatively easy to fix. Call a roofing company and ask them to install roof venting that will ensure condensation caused by the difference in temperature between your main living space is given a chance to evaporate.

Curling Shingles

One of the surest signs that a roof is in trouble is when shingles start to curl up and away from the roof deck. Shingles only curl when they have become completely dried out, and this also indicates that they are no longer serving asan adequate water repellent.

If your shingles are starting to curl, leaks probably aren’t far behind. The only way to guarantee that this won’t happen is to re-roof the house. Though it is possible to replace only the most worn-out patches of shingle, this only fixes the most visible problem.

Instead of opting for a short-term fix, see what Professional Roofers can do to replace your entire roof and install a new roofing system that will be watertight for years to come.

3. If the Warranty is Running Out

Most roofs come with a warranty based on the type of shingle that has been installed. Laminated shingles, for example, tend to be good for twenty-five to thirty-five years, while three tab shingles tend to top out at twenty years.

While extreme weather like hail can cause roofs to be damaged and to need replacement sooner, if you are reaching the end of your warranty it is best to be on the safe side and ask for a professional appraisal from a roofing company.

If you want to make sure your home will stay safe and dry through the winter to come, it is important to start checking for problems now. Summer is the busy season for the roofing industry, so if you see any of these telltale signs of roof damage, be sure to book repairs today.
