Futuristic weddings: 4 modern trends couples are embracing

Once upon a time it was a purely religious affair. Now, it would be fair to say that the typical wedding is changing somewhat.

Sure, religious ceremonies are very common and most probably will be until the end of time. At the same time, a new type of wedding has entered the equation  one which is putting a modern spin on the big day.

In truth, there are a whole host of quirks that are now entering the picture. For the purposes of today, we will now mull over some of the most common ones.

Informal food

Again, if we were rolling back the years, a three-course meal was the norm for pretty much every wedding going. Now, things are changing.

Buffets have of course entered the picture, but it doesn’t stop there. Some couples are going completely informal and offering the likes of hot dogs for main meals, while on the sweet side American sweets are something else that is proving popular (usually in the modern sweet station format). In short, informal is normal.

A complete break in tradition

For years, we were all used to attending weddings and having the same script. As soon as we left the church, or registry office, we all understood our place. The first dance came at one period, the speeches at another – and it all ran like clockwork.

Now, we’re entering a slightly different period. We are entering a stage where anything can happen – and it’s completely acceptable. For example, there have been cases of some first dances occurring as soon as the bride and groom arrive at the reception venue. Then, instead of happening after the meal, speeches can occur before.

Small changes like this have slowly come normal and to the modern couple, it’s not even questioned.

The emergence of crafts

It would be fair to say that the wedding industry is one of the most expensive arounds and the fact that the average day costs around $35,000 should say everything you need to know about this.

The knock-on effect of this over the years is that more and more couples are turning to crafts. Rather than spend huge amounts of money paying professionals, couples are taking the time to make decorations themselves.

Again, this may have raised eyebrows several years ago, but now the likes of table decorations and even flower arrangements tend to have had the DIY approach.

The rise of cocktail weddings

OK, so the terminology does vary between publications, but another big trend we are seeing is “cocktail weddings”. As the name suggests, this is a focus on cocktails and canapes through the wedding reception – and not one on a proper, sit-down dinner.

Unsurprisingly, cost is a big driver of this, but there are other reasons. A lot of bride and grooms are finding that they just want something a bit more relaxed, and allowing their guests to mingle between cocktails is the ideal way to do this.
