Transforming your bedroom from boring to beautiful

We spend around a third of our lives in bed, so it makes sense that we would want to ensure the bedroom looks good. Often, we concentrate less on the rooms that others don’t see. Why not spend a little time on transforming your bedroom from boring to beautiful? Whether you follow the current interior design trends or you prefer to go your own unique way, the following areas will provide you with food for thought.

Walls

Do you prefer wallpaper or paint? Maybe, you would like a combination of the two. Have a look around DIY stores and grab some wallpaper samples and paint tester pots. Don’t settle for something you’re not keen on; make sure you are 100% happy before embarking on redecorating. Whatever your final decision is, be sure to do it properly. Use masking tape around light switches and plug sockets as well as skirting board and coving. Don’t forget to paint the ceiling too!

Window coverings and soft furnishings

Blinds and/or curtains can make or break the overall look of a room. It’s imperative to have something on the window else you sacrifice your privacy and risk being woken in the early hours during the summer months. Nowadays, neither curtains nor blinds have to be boring. Bold colours and patterns can add a focal point if you opt for plain walls.

The addition of soft furnishings to your bedroom can make a huge difference to the overall look of the room. Consider a few cushions scattered on the bed or a throw on the chair (if you’re lucky enough to have a dressing table!).

Flooring

Do you prefer soft carpet underfoot or hard wood? If you have allergies or have furry pets, wooden floors are a must as they are much easier to keep clean. However, if you are really fond of the fluffy softness that a carpet brings, consider pairing wood or laminate flooring with a rug. Ensure that you vacuum and air the rug on a regular basis to minimise the impact on your allergies. Neutral colours are best when it comes to flooring, though a pattern in the weave of carpets can prevent stains from showing easily.

Furniture

This is probably the area on which you will end up spending the most money. The bed is the main piece of furniture you need to spend a long time considering. After all, you will spend a long time relaxing, sleeping and having fun in there, so best make it comfortable! If you have back pain, then it is important to pick the right mattress. The best mattress for your back will be able to properly support your spine in any sleeping position and help relax your muscles.

Once you’ve seen beds you like, make sure that you have found out exact mattress sizes as they can differ. If you’re on a tight budget, upcycling your existing furniture may be an option. A lick of furniture paint and some new handles or knobs can work wonders and create the look you desire. However, if you do have a budget for new things, decide if you want the vintage look or modern. Good quality vintage furniture can be found in a variety of antique shops or search on local selling sites for better bargains. It’s always best to have a proper look before committing to buying something. Don’t forget to take a tape measure too as it’s important it will fit in the room properly.
