Check out these little-known gems for a truly unique vacation. Enjoy relaxing on the beach or hiking in the mountains. There are hundreds of ways to explore fun, fresh locations with friends and family with these recommendations.

Old Town Saint Augustine

This Florida town is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. Its gorgeous 1500s Spanish architecture includes the original fort Castillo De San Marcos which visitors can tour, as well as an old school house, jail, and original cobblestone and cannonballs.

Outside of the natural history, there are shops, museums, restaurants, and great beach access. The Saint Augustine beach is a great place to show off your best beach looks, such as the look you get from wearing stylish swimsuits in combination with stunning summer footwear. Think classy, leather sandals, flip flops or similar. Enjoy fresh catch at a seaside restaurant and soak up the sun rays before diving into the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean waves.

Garden of the Gods

Located in the sunny Colorado mountains, Garden of the Gods is a lesser known natural landmark in the area. Contrary to the crowded Rocky Mountain National Park, this gem is comprised of massive sandstone rocks. Explore the area for a day trip and enjoy the gorgeous sights and amazing view of the snow capped mountains.

Lake Lure, North Carolina

This gorgeous lakeside vacation spot is full of luxury cabins in the secluded beauty of the North Carolina wilderness. While Asheville is a common NC vacation spot, you’ll love Lake Lure for its serene setting and proximity to lots of vibrant local towns.

Drive a short distance to spend the day climbing Chimney Rock and visiting the adorable restaurants, gift shops, and breweries below. Equally close are Buffalo Creek Park, which is great for mountain biking, and The Blue Ridge Foothills. Spend the day adventuring in nature and your nights in a luxury lakefront cabin. Some visitors even enjoy taking a Dirty Dancing sightseeing tour, as much of the film was shot there in the 1980s.

Monterey, California

Those hoping to hit the beach for vacation may start their plans with Malibu beach. This area can get crowded, as it is popular among tourists. The true hidden gem of California is Monterey. This North California oasis is comprised of gorgeous cliffside mansions, world class golf courses, and lots of fun shops and restaurants.

According to National Geographic, Monterey is the place to be for those interested in whale watching. Visitors each year watch for whales at the famous Monterey Bay Whale Watch Center. Also popular is the Old Fisherman’s Wharf, home to food, shops, and sailing on the bay. With wildlife, fine dining, and gorgeous sights, Monterey Bay is truly the experience of a lifetime.

Estes Park

Tourists regularly visit Colorado to ski, hike in the gorgeous Rocky Mountains, and enjoy the local cuisine. Rather than head to crowded tourist spots like Breckenridge, try staying in beautiful Estes Park. This home away from home is friendly and full of unique wildlife. Step out of your cabin into the morning snow to come face to face with the local elk population.

This town is home to spirited local breweries and distilleries like Dancing Pines Distillery. Try a spring break trip to Estes Park for close proximity to great skiing lodges, without the usual winter crowds. Spring is great, but even a summer trip to sightsee and hike can be worth the trip. Estes Park is full of friendly locals, beautiful nature, and exciting mountain adventures.
