Subtle Signs Of Liver Problems You Should Never Ignore

Your liver plays a significant role in keeping you healthy because it maintains the metabolic function and eliminates the harmful toxins from the body. But its health is something that you may not pay as much attention to as it deserves. The problem is that almost everyone associates liver disease with overuse of alcohol. So you might assume that you are safe if you don’t drink or do it in moderation. The truth is that liver disease is more common that it seems to be and non-drinkers are as susceptible as heavy drinkers are.

To make things worse, the signs of trouble are hard to notice during the initial stages of the disease. This makes the disease hard to diagnose and difficult to resolve in time. Like any other health issue, delay in diagnosis can make the case more complicated and treatment becomes difficult if it gets too late. Wouldn’t it be better to be watchful for the silent signs of liver disease so that you can seek timely help? Here are the subtle signs that you should watch out for.

Itchy skin

You will probably associate itchy skin with an allergy, dry weather or lack of good skincare, but it may be linked with liver issues too. Primary biliary cholangitis, a chronic disease of the liver, destroys the bile ducts in the organ. The symptoms of the disease are non-existent but you should watch out for itchiness of your skin. If your skin feels dry and itchy persistently and the problem does not go with treatment, a complete medical checkup is mandatory.

Pale skin and eyes

If you notice your skin and eyes turning pale yellow in color, it should definitely ring warning bells. This symptom indicates an increase in bilirubin levels in the body, which is a sign of jaundice. You should take the pallor of the skin and eyes very seriously because they can point out dangerous liver issues such as hepatitis B and cirrhosis.

Unexplained weight gain

Gaining weight despite eating healthy and exercising regularly is always a cause of concern. Believe it or not, an unhealthy liver may also be responsible for unexplained and unexpected weight gain. It could be the first sign of liver cirrhosis, which replaces the healthy tissue with scar tissue. Gradually, this scar tissue impedes the blood flow in the organ and inhibits its performance. So make sure that you take weight gain more seriously, particularly if there is no reason for it.

Unexplained weight loss

While unexplained weight gain is not good news for anyone, you should also not ignore unexplained weight loss. Often, liver problems make you lose your appetite and weight loss may happen naturally. Combined with digestive issues, appetite loss may aggravate the condition even further. These are subtle signs of liver disease lurking in there. This condition may be a red flag of hepatitis C, an infection that causes inflammation of the liver

Digestive problems

Digestive issues such as diarrhea, nausea, bloating and abdominal pain may not always be caused by an underperforming digestive function. They can be related to something as disconcerting as liver failure. It is worth exploring and trying the organic detox measures to cleanse the liver and kidneys if you combat digestive problems regularly. But constant pain and swelling in the abdominal area requires immediate medical attention.

Darker urine

A sign that is easy to overlook is darker urine but it points out to serious issue with your liver. A very yellow color indicates that you may be severely dehydrated but very dark urine can be a sign of something as serious as liver failure. You may also notice that your feces appear yellow rather than brown in this condition. If you witness these signs frequently, see a doctor sooner rather than later because they indicate that your liver is damaged and unable to flush out toxins from the body.

Insomnia

One of the common problems that people of all ages battle with is insomnia. It is hard to associate lack of sleep with an underperforming liver but the truth is that there can be a deep link between the two problems. When your liver fails to flush out toxins, your sleep patterns go haywire and you may end up counting hours every night. Do pay attention to this silent red flag and get help as soon as you can.

Constant fatigue

Besides depriving you of sleep, liver issues can cause constant fatigue as well. It is but obvious that you will be restless if you continue to have sleepless nights. Additionally, the toxins circulating in your bloodstream make you feel tired and lethargic all the time. Seeing a doctor for a complete checkup is a good idea if exhaustion becomes a way of life.

Bruising easily

It is common to bruise more easily as you get older because your skin gets thinner. But this can also be a subtle indication of liver problems brewing inside because the organ is unable to process enough proteins that can clot wounds and heal bruises. This common sign is easy to ignore but you should address it more attentively.

Confusion and memory loss

Hard to believe but confusion and memory loss may point out to serious issues with the primary detox organ in your body! Obviously, when it is unable to clear the toxins from your body, you may end up feeling lost and confused. The reason is that the toxins in your bloodstream travel to the brain and cloud it to the extent that it stops functioning properly. A problem in your liver can harm your brain as much as it can make you physically sick.

These symptoms are subtle enough to go unnoticed or you may link them up with health issues other than liver disease. But now that you are more aware, you should be more vigilant as well. If you experience one or more of these regularly, a visit to a specialist is a must. Remember that timely diagnosis and treatment can be life-saving in case of liver ailments while delay can cause damage beyond repair.
