Unfortunately, laundry is one of those jobs that unless you outsource, you can’t get away from. It has to be done if you want to wear clothes! However, it is also a task that many households struggle to stay on top of, especially if they have children or work full time.
It does not have to be such a struggle though. While we can’t make it go away, we can share some top tips to help to keep on top of it a little bit easier. Ready to find out how? Read on!
Do it more often – or less often!
Sounds confusing huh? Well, it depends on the sort of person that you are. Some people find that saving it all up and spending one day a week doing it in bulk makes it easier to manage as they are in the mindset to get it washed, dried and put away in one go. Other people find doing it little and often is the way to go so that they do not get overwhelmed by the task.
If the laundry is getting you down, try both of these ways and see which one works best for you!
Multitask
Thanks to technology, there are plenty of things that you can do at the same time as sorting out the laundry and putting it away. Stream your favorite music on your phone or home Bluetooth system, download some interesting podcasts or download the audio version of that book that you have always wanted to read to listen while you work.
Invest in divided baskets or hampers
Sorting your laundry can be a tedious job, so it serves to find ways to motivate your family to do it without too much prompting and arguments.
A divided laundry basket or hamper means that everyone in your household should (theoretically) sort their own laundry out at the point of taking their clothes off. One section for dark clothing, one for lights and one for colors.
By encouraging them to put them into the right section in the hamper, it saves you the hassle of sitting on the floor in front of the washing machine and sorting them all out before you put them in.
Give each family member a sock bag
Every household seems to have the same problem with socks going missing. No one ever seems to know where they go, but every house has a bag or tub of lone socks. By giving your family a mesh bag, those fabulous novelty socks will stay as a pair for a bit longer – or that is the plan, anyway!
Fold straight from the dryer
For many of us, it is not the actual washing of the clothes, or even the drying that we find hard to stay on top of; it is the folding and putting away. If you can, get into the routine of folding clothes as soon as you take them off the washing line or out of the dryer. It reduces creasing and the need to press them and is one less job to think about later.
