How Streaming Changed Travel Forever

All opinions are mine and mine alone.

Something quite remarkable happened over the last ten years, and practically nobody noticed. Instead of waiting for broadcasters to send out the content you wanted over the airwaves, online video services were learning that you could do it on-demand. It means that if you wanted to watch something, you didn’t have to look through the TV times – you could just open an app and enjoy the content straight away, without any of the usual fuss.

This quiet tech revolution went on in the background for the first few years, and people didn’t really notice it happening. But then it started gaining traction in the culture, and now everyone is doing it like it was always there.

That’s an interesting development. It means that we can travel anywhere we like in the world and consume content.

We Can Now Binge When We Go Abroad

Go back a few years, and binging wasn’t really a thing you did unless you were going for a night out on the town. But today, it refers to being able to consume a vast library of content in a single session. And that’s great news for travelers. You get back from a day of sightseeing, put the TV on, and then make your way through a whole series of shows. It’s a great way of entertaining yourself while you’re away.

Country-Gated Content Is An Issue

Streaming services have different rules about what you watch in particular places. Netflix, for instance, blocks some of its content in specific countries, which can be annoying when you travel.

That’s why we’ve seen the rise of TV VPNs, according to troypoint.com. People want to watch the same shows when they travel overseas. Now a bunch of companies are offering tools to prevent these streaming services from blocking content. They allow viewers to pose as though they are in one country when, in fact, they are in another.

We Can Consume Content While On The Move

Ten years ago, mobile streaming services were still fledgling and the size of their content library was small. Today that’s all changed. Plus handheld devices have generally become much more capable, able to stream high-definition content with ease.

Things are changing, according to forbes.com. When people go overseas, they’re able to make much better use of “dead time.” Instead of staring blankly out of the coach, they can just consume their favorite content on their mobile devices, so long as they have an internet connection.

That’s a big change from just a few years ago. In the past, you’d pay a premium for in-vehicle entertainment, but those days appear to be well and truly behind us.

This development means that the TV ad business is in chronic decline. Companies just don’t want to pay the premiums anymore, and prices are falling. And that’s having a knock-on effect on the quality of programming on regular television. It’s nothing like as good as it was in the past. So streaming while traveling seems like the more sensible option.
