Always keep your shutters, curtains or blinds open during the day and let the sunshine, naturally warm your property. Then as soon as the sun sets, close your window dressings to keep the heat in.
Don’t let heat escape through your chimney
These days most fireplaces are simply decorative. However, if your fireplace is no longer in use then you may be losing a huge amount of heat through your open chimney. Thankfully, the solution is relatively simple and effective. By installing a chimney balloon, you can block the flow of air from the open chimney and keep the warm air in your home. Just remember to remove it before you light a fire!
Make your own draught excluder
Resting a draught excluder at the gap under your doors will help keep your property warm and stop those chilly draughts from lowering the temperature. This is especially effective if you’re only heating a couple of rooms and trying to keep costs low. You can pick up a draught excluder online or on the high street, or if you fancy a challenge try making one yourself!
Clear the radiators
Maybe your rooms are an awkward shape, or you’re trying to maximise the amount of space in your living room, unfortunately pushing furniture up against your radiators is effectively restricting the flow of warm air and heat. Leave a gap where you can or consider rearranging your furniture to improve the heat flow.
And finally, put on a sweater
Feeling a little chilly? Before you reach for that thermostat and turn up the heat, put on a couple more layers of clothing. Another pair of socks, a sweater, a blanket and a hot water bottle etc – consider putting on the heating as a last resort and turn it off again when you’ve warmed up.
