While your bathroom upgrade can be a lot of fun, there are a few bathroom decor mistakes that you might want to avoid. Don’t worry, we’ve made them so you don’t have to. - Neglecting Your Budget
You need to give yourself a bathroom decor budget before you start your project. Whether you’re doing it alone or hiring someone to do it for you, you need to know how much you can actually afford. This is also a great time to make a list of “needs” vs “wants.” What are your priorities here? If you know you need new DIY tiles and a claw foot tub, what wants are you able to put to the side until those things are taken care of? Plan everything with your needs in mind first to make sure you don’t end up spending more than you have.
- Forgetting About Storage
Do you ever feel like there just aren’t enough places to put things in your bathroom? When you’re reworking the design, you get to fix that. Take a quick inventory of all of the things that you keep (or would like to keep) in your bathroom. Towels, toiletries, medications: whatever you need space for. Whether you buy external storage options like shelves or utility carts, or you install some new cabinets, give yourself some space!
- Mismatching Everything
There’s something cute about a kitschy and mismatched space, but it’s usually done with intention. You don’t want to overdo it. This is another place where we’re considering needs and wants. Do you need to have loud tiles or bathroom wall colors? Go minimal with the rest of the objects in the bathroom. Are your UNpaper Towels busy patterns? Color-coordinate with complementary pieces that are more basic. You don’t want to overwhelm the eye when it comes to good design. Pick a color scheme and stick with it, and aim for one or two main focal points.
- Putting the Toilet Center Stage
On focal points: your toilet shouldn’t be one of them.
Too many bathroom designers make the mistake of putting the toilet right in front of the door. There’s no way to hide that. That’s not what you want to see, especially if you keep your bathroom door open when it’s not in use. It’s a great idea to have a small “toilet cubby”, and some bathrooms even have a private toilet room within them. If not, though, tuck it against the cabinets so you won’t see it until you’re in the bathroom. You want your design to shine, not the toilet.
Have You Made These Bathroom Decor Mistakes?
Your new bathroom doesn’t have to be a design disaster. Avoid these bathroom decor mistakes and you’ll be well on your way to a cozy space that you’ll love to lounge in. Enjoy your time in the tub with a bathroom design that you love.
