The Five Best and Worst Reasons to Consider Cosmetic Surgery

All opijnions are mine and mine alone.

People might consider cosmetic surgery for many reasons: self-esteem, youth, or necessity. In Western society, we are made to feel shamed for considering cosmetic surgery. “Plastic surgery” has become synonymous with being fake during the current love yourself revolution, urging people to love their natural selves.

However, why does Western culture hate cosmetic surgery so much? Can cosmetic surgery genuinely improve someone’s self-confidence? Absolutely! For some people, cosmetic surgery can be done for ourselves rather than trying to conform to the rigid beauty standards in place. Which is great! Self-love takes many different forms, cosmetic surgery included. Below are three of the best reasons to consider cosmetic surgery, and three of the worst.

Good Reasons to Consider Cosmetic Surgery

Self-Confidence

Whether it’s dying your hair, a new hair cut, changing your wardrobe, or a nose job, there is a healthy dose of self-confidence we get from changing the norm. Every single one of us has at least one thing we’d like to change, shrink or have more of. Other people shouldn’t might make you feel uncomfortable for wanting to “change” or alter yourself.

Instead, we should encourage each other to seek out the best versions of ourselves.  Perhaps your friend’s best version of themselves includes more lashes, more hair, softer skin, a slightly smaller nose, or slightly bigger lips. We have ways today to make us feel less inadequate about our appearance. A small bit of plastic surgery can help fix these inadequacies, but an obsession with changing our appearance can be highly detrimental.

To Aid Physical Comfort

Breast augmentation surgery, like breast reduction surgery, can help immensely with neck, lower back and shoulder pain. If you think your breasts are too large for your body proportion, consult a surgeon like those at the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute to do something about that discomfort immediately. You could easily be a candidate for a breast reduction surgery. Those who have undergone breast reduction surgery have reported better posture, improved comfort and overall happiness with their decision.

If you have an underlying condition that causes discomfort in your jaw, teeth, bones or the tissue of your face, maxillofacial surgery (better known as jaw surgery) can help improve your discomfort. Maybe you have trouble breathing? Rhinoplasty is not just a cosmetic surgery, but it can help to improve your breathing also.

Improved Quality of Life

Cosmetic surgery is not the secret to life’s happiness, nor can it replace basic mental and self-care. However, it can lead to a potential change in lifestyle which boosts healthy habits. Abdominal sculpting procedure, or abdominoplasty,  patients have reported feeling more comfortable in their skin and their bodies enough to assist them in exercising, better eating habits and appetite control

For people who have lost confidence due to their appearances, cosmetic surgery could open a world of opportunities to them. While it stil takes a long time of introspection to see the best version of ourselves inside, cosmetic surgery can help us see the best version of ourselves on the outside also. If you have experienced a positive emotional, physical and phycological benefit due to cosmetic surgery, that’s great! You might have a couple other things you want to tweak and tuck, but you should first consider your motivation before you have another surgery.

Bad Reasons to Consider Cosmetic Surgery

Vanity

It’s one thing to have a self-confidence boost from a cosmetic touch up, it’s another to base your entire self-worth cosmetic surgery. If you feel like cosmetic surgery will be the magic key to your beautiful or sexy self, you might cause more damage than improvement

If you are trying to re-imagine yourself as someone else through cosmetic surgery, this is a major red flag. Self-improvement via cosmetic surgery won’t get you far if you’re investing into it for the wrong reason. You can become obsessed, and tightly woven into the trending beauty standards, and leave yourself with more augmented than natural features. It’s always worth considering what your goal is with cosmetic surgery, and discussing it with your surgeon.

Someone Else Wants You To

Whether it’s a spouse, significant other, a family member, or someone from work, no one has the right to pressure you into having cosmetic surgery done. Your body, your choice. Having plastic surgery done because someone wants you to is one of the worst reasons to get the procedure.

You are the person who has to live with the surgery, the aftermath and the psychological implications afterward. If someone believes that you need to have something changed, maybe it’s time for them be to be removed from your life.

To Be Like the Celebs

The celebrities don’t even look like the celebrities. A celebrity image is just that: an image. An image often supported by their career, their wealth, sponsorship. and immense pressure to look perfect. To follow in their footsteps and mold yourself after this idea of a beter self is the wrong motivator behind cosmetic surgery. It will, inevitably, leave you unfulfilled.
