Installing a pond is only a small part of owning one. Once you have the pond of your dreams, you must keep up with its maintenance to keep it healthy, and this is especially true over the winter period. Whether you’re a pond newbie or you want to refresh your memory of how to maintain your pond, here are some maintenance tips for your pond during the colder months. 

Remove Leaves and Dead Plants

Leaves start falling off the trees in large amounts during the autumn, so it’s crucial to keep on top of raking them in. Look out for any debris, dead plants, and plant matter, and use a rake to bring it all in as often as possible. If you have any summer plants that won’t survive the winter, then you should also make sure to take them inside so they will be alive and thriving come the spring.

This means your pond is less likely to freeze over, maintaining a warmer temperature even when the outside drops. This is especially helpful if you have fish, as it will ensure that enough oxygen is reaching the pond. 

Use a Pond Cover 

One of the easiest ways to maintain your pond over winter is to place a cover over it. This ensures that no leaves fall into it and that your fish are protected from predators when they are at their most vulnerable. 

Keep an Eye on it

Having a pond means checking on it regularly, especially through the colder months and even more so if you have fish. A pond isn’t a one job finish; you must get out there and see if everything is running smoothly! Check the pumps, filters, whether any dead plants are in there, and whether any ice is forming. This way, if anything goes wrong, you can see to it straight away and eliminate the problem before it gets any worse.
