Health and Beauty during a pandemic

Similar to other industries, the global health and beauty industry has also been adversely affected by the world pandemic COVID-19 crisis. Most of the sales were largely affected during the first few weeks that the pandemic began forcing the industry to craft ways to survive. From skincare products, fragrances, color cosmetics, hair care and personal care manufacturers have had to come up with newer products and better marketing strategies.

Most of the health and beauty brands have switched their manufacturing to produce products used during the pandemic which include hand sanitizers and cleaning agents. These are some of the social and economic changes that beauty companies have had to make to survive while prioritizing consumer health.

Many who are making skin-care, hair-care, and bath-and-body products seem to be benefiting from self-care trends. But, the restriction in movement has seen most consumers staying indoors and adjusting their normal routines. As a result, brands have to offer escapism for customers who are facing challenges while keeping them safe. Here are some alterations and ways that the health and beauty industry has had to cope with the challenges.

More of DIY trends

Due to worldwide lockdowns that were introduced, most consumers were restricted to the comfort of their homes. This meant no trips to the hairdresser, spa and saloons. As an alternative consumers resorted to at-home DIY kits. At-home beauty skin treatments gained traction as many embraced the use of many DIY beauty products in the market. This led to a rise in the demand for home beauty DIY kits forcing beauty manufacturers to increase their production.

Rise in self-care

Many consumers are into self-care taking longer baths to enhance their skincare routines and investing in their mindfulness. They have enrolled in mindfulness programs and mind and body practices like yoga classes. This is all in an attempt to bring serenity into their home using beauty products to bring joy into their lives.

High levels of hygiene

The use of soap, sanitizers and an increase in oral care practices is on the rise. The use of shower gels, mouthwashes and soaps to maintain high levels of hygiene is also a must-have to reduce the transmission of the virus. Many consumers are adhering to the set pandemic protocols increasing the demand for beauty and personal care products that are hygiene-focused. As more people rush to stock sanitizers which are among the top covid-19 necessities, the health and beauty industry has been forced to invent better products to combat viral transmission.

A decrease in the need for makeups

It is quite normal to put on make-up when leaving the house, but with the pandemic restrictions, many have seen no need to wear make-up. The confinement led most people to stick to make-up free trends since they saw no need to apply make-up. Instead, they preferred to focus on their body cleanliness and hygiene.

Skin health is a big deal

Consumers are now keen on their skin health. The time spent at home has created more time and focus towards maintaining healthy skin the natural way. There has been an increase in products that rejuvenate the skin. These include products like those targeting issues such as acne and dry skin as consumers work towards improving the look and feel of their skin.

A rise in digital and e-commerce

The use of e-commerce as more people go digital continues to rise and is likely to accelerate as online engagement and spending increase. With the closure of most shops all over the world, consumers embraced online platforms and home deliveries to purchase their desired beauty products. The surge is likely to continue rising as more people embrace the use of these platforms. Since the future is not known, retailers and brands now have to prioritize and improve their online strategies for a successful beauty business.

Though the health and beauty industry was hit hard and still trying to stay afloat, 2020 will remain as one of the worst years the industry has had to withstand. Brands now need to speed up product innovation and focus on collaboration among brands and retailers. Health and beauty industry players will need to prioritize digital channels to capture and convert the attention of existing and new customers.
