Want to live more sustainably? Try these eco-friendly swaps at home

Are you worried about your carbon footprint? Are you trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle but are unsure of where to begin? If we all make small, simple changes to our lifestyles, then we can all make a positive difference to the planet we share. After all, we only have one.

To help get you started, I’ve gathered my essential eco-friendly swaps you can try at home. Read on to find out more.

Swap CFL bulbs for LED bulbs

CFL or compact fluorescent lights are the traditional energy-saving bulbs you probably have in your home right now. And while they’re a standard choice for many homeowners, there is a better, more eco-friendly option. Lighting options, such as these LED Light bulbs, are not only stylish and versatile, they also use less energy than traditional energy-saving bulbs, last longer and are much better for the environment.

CFL bulbs waste large amounts of energy via heat, while LED bulbs are much more efficient only wasting around 5%. This lower energy choice doesn’t just benefit the planet, it also benefits your wallet, as less energy consumption means lower energy bills.

Swap plastic wrap for beeswax wraps

We all know that packing your own lunch means less food waste and is better for your bank balance, but how you transport your lunch can have a detrimental effect on the planet. Instead of wrapping your sandwiches in plastic wrap or tin foil, consider switching to beeswax wraps. These eco-friendly solutions are biodegradable and fully compostable. These clever wraps preserve your food with organic cotton materials and sustainably sourced beeswax, they’re also reusable, making them the perfect lunchtime companion.

Swap kitchen roll for bamboo cloths

Cleaning your home and wiping up spillages is part of everyday life, however, that roll of kitchen paper or paper towel you purchase every week can be harmful to the environment and is incredibly wasteful. Instead, consider swapping your kitchen roll for reusable bamboo cloths. These versatile cloths are perfect for household cleaning and can be washed in your machine to keep them fresh and hygienic.

Swap high-temperature washes for cooler cycles

Whether it’s towels or bed linen, tea towels or cloths, when fabrics get grimy we want to banish those germs and bacteria on the highest wash possible. Sadly, this uses high amounts of energy and these longer washes mean more water usage. Swap your high-temperature washes for cooler cycles, and if you’re worried about bacteria, consider adding an anti-bacterial cleanser to your washes for peace of mind.

And finally, swap traditional bin liners for compostable bin bags

Taking out the trash and emptying the household bin is a job no one enjoys, and while you might be doing your bit to reduce your overall household waste and improving your recycling habits, you might want to switch your bin bag of choice. Swapping traditional bin liners for compostable versions means fewer bin bags at landfill, and as they decompose at around 3 months, you know you’re doing your bit for the planet.
