5 Tips for Hosting Your Very Own Tea Party

All opinions are mine and mine alone.

When you think of the word “tea parties” do you think about little girls and stuffed animals playing pretend or do you think about posh British people with their pinkies in the air? Well, high tea is something that anybody from any class can enjoy.  It’s fun, it can be elegant, and many countries all over the globe have their own variation of how they do tea parties. In general, it’s something that can be a lot of fun, whether you do it with children, a group of friends, or even your family. These are some helpful tips for creating your high tea party.

First, pick the best location in your home

Whether you’re doing some renovating for your dream home, or you already have a special spot in mind, just be sure to know that location truly matters for a tea party. You want to make sure that it’s in a nicely decorated area that has lots of natural lighting.

Time of day

You don’t need to go to London to experience a luxurious afternoon tea. Since this can be easily created at home and can be easily hosted, it means it’s far more manageable to do. Traditionally, afternoon tea was invented by Anne, the Duchess of Bedford. She would traditionally have her afternoon tea at 4 pm. Many people will have it in the late afternoon such as 4 pm but it is realistically accepted in the late morning throughout the entirety of the afternoon.

How should the food be served?

You can make it traditionally, but you have the option of being as fun and wacky as you’d like. The basic premise is that the food is served on a three-tiered tray.  The more traditional route would be to have your sandwiches and more savory snacks at the bottom of the tier. These are usually going to be the biggest portions.

The second section will have items such as scones as these are less sweet. These will be accompanied by marmalade, jams, chutney, and clotted cream.  The top tier is where all of the sweets will be served. You can allow your imagination to run wild and serve sweet treats such as a classic red velvet cake, eclairs, tartlets, or anything you and your guest would love.

The drinks

You can serve tea at your tea party, but if you visit cafes and restaurants, they’ll often serve any sort of drink you may like with the meal.  If you’re wanting to keep it traditional then you can serve earl grey tea as this is the most popular, but other teas such as mint or Assam are quite popular too. You can even have some fun with it and serve a bottle of delicious champagne for your tea party. The possibilities are simply endless.

What are some materials that a tea party must have?

It’s always important to have some good china and a nice teapot.  These can be very affordable and are very abundant at thrift shops. Paper or plastic cups just don’t bring the same atmosphere as china does, plus it is so much more environmentally friendly. You’ll also have to make sure to have some proper cloth napkins, matching plates, and some small cutlery such as teaspoons and pastries forks.
