It seems we are flooded with images of perfect skin. From Instagram to Pinterest, every other picture is a girl with a dewy, flawless and glowy face. But, for most of us, the reality is, clear skin is hard to come by. You may have a ten-step skincare routine, the best sunscreen and drink gallons of water, but there are some things that you may never have considered as to why you may be breaking out.
City Air
Pollution from the city can be one significant factor you may have never considered before. Chemicals can pollute the air of big cities, and the pollutants are everywhere. Cars, factories and other nefarious substances can cling to your skin after a day out in the city. Places like Los Angeles are awful for skin pollutants, as their air pollution rate is off the charts. For most people, moving out, however, can seem like a drastic way to handle the situation if you think the city air is damaging your skin. Instead, there are a few steps you can take that are more accessible. The first thing you should do is invest in a cream that protects your skin barrier, like this cult favourite cream by Paula’s choice. The cream will provide a barrier that your face can use against any harsh chemicals coming in contact with your skin, thus preventing breakouts caused by the pollutants.
Your Pillowcase
Another factor that can majorly affect your skin is your pillowcase. Our pillows can hold onto germs and often are harsh, abrasive surfaces that your skin hates. The first thing you should do is wash and change your pillowcase more often. Ideally, this would be every 2-3 days, but for most, once a week. If you want to be super organized, it might be worth investing in a custom stick on calendar to help you keep track of your wash schedule and other housekeeping challenges.
Moreover, your pillowcase (depending on care instructions) should be washed on high heat to destroy germs on the fabric and ensure it stays cleaner for longer. Also, consider the detergent you use to clean your pillow. Some fabric conditioners can also contain traces of chemicals that could cause you to break out, so buy something that has sensitive to the skin on the front, and you should be good to go.
Technology
Lastly, and this is really overlooked, is anything that comes near your face, for example, your phone, needs to be sanitized regularly. Our phones can actually be some of the most germ-ridden objects we own, as it travels everywhere with us- even to the toilet! In order to combat this, make sure you clean your phone with some anti-bacterial wipes so that when you are picking up the phone to anyone, your cheek doesn’t pick the bacteria.
Hopefully, after all these tips, your skin will be feeling much, much better. If it isn’t, it may be worth visiting a dermatologist.
