Signs are big in home decor right now, and if you are of a crafty persuasion you can create your own at a fraction of the cost they go for in shops. Read on to find out how.
How to paint the lettering on your sign
Before we get started with some specific sign ideas it’s important to consider how you will get the lettering onto your sign. The most obvious choice here is to hand paint each letter with something like acrylic paint. However, if you do choose this option, be sure to draw each letter out first and use a fine brush to get the edges as sharp as possible. Of course, to help you and make things go faster you could use a stencil too.
Another very popular option right now is to use a digital cutting machine like the Cricut to make vinyl lettering. The benefit of this is that there are many fonts to choose from, the details of each letter are captured in a very crisp way, and if you choose permanent vinyl your crafts will last longer too.
Pallet sign
Making a pallet sign has to be one of the easiest ways to brighten up and personalize your home decor. All you need is a piece of pallet big enough for your sign, some paint, some string for hanging, and typical DIY tools that you will find around the home.
To get it looking the best it can be there is a small amount of prep work that is required. That means light sanding with some sandpaper, so your painting surface is nice and smooth. If you are going for a rustic, cozy look, you may wish to give the ends of each plank some attention too. A great tool for doing this is a multi-tool, as they are small enough to provide plenty of control for making those edges look more worn!
Once you have your wooden pallet base prepared you can move on to painting your sign. Using a combination of two or three colors can work well here, especially if you are going for something beach-themed ( a popular option for this kind of base). Great phrases to use here include; “Seas the day”, “I’d rather be at the beach” and “Life’s a Beach!”
Circular sign
Another popular option for creating a sign to enhance your home is a disc or circular shape. Indeed there are many options to explore when creating this shape, from welcome and number signs for outdoors to phrases and images to liven up your home. Your imagination is the limit.
Of course, there are a few things you need to know before you begin creating your sign. The first is that you can save yourself a lot of hassle by finding wood rounds that are already precut, and sanded. This is because they will be perfectly smooth and ready for you to paint or apply your vinyl without any additional prep.
Also if you plan to hang your sign outside you will need to give it a couple of coats of clear varnish first. Make sure each coat dries before you apply the next, and be sure to cover both the front and back of the sign, as well as any hole where the string to hand it may go.
Remember too that you don’t have to be limited to 2D designs when creating this kind of sign. In fact, for those that will be used indoors, you can add dried or silk foliage, as well as lettering for a classic, sophisticated look.

Vertical wreath sign
Lastly, a home decor sign that you can create yourself is the vertical wreath option. This is constructed from a tall plank of wood around 1 meter high, with the letters placed on top of each other to vertically spell out a word. Letters can be painted, stenciled, made from vinyl, or if using blackboard paint to coat the board written in chalk or chalk pen.
Popular options are words with the letter ‘O’ in them like home, hello, howdy, love, and welcome because the ‘O’ can be replaced with a small wreath that either fits with the decor of your home or adds a seasonal touch. Indeed, some crafters create these signs with wreaths that can change out as the seasons change, making sure they keep pace with the time of year. Wreaths can be bought from places like Hobby Lobby, Micheals, Home Depot, and even Target inexpensively, or made at home pretty easily.
Alternatively, to create a wreath, all you will need is a wreath form, and some dried or silk flowers and leaves. To save time use hot glue to fix them in position. To attach the wreath to your sign, leave a space where the letter ‘O’ should go and add a small nail or hook instead. Then you can change out your wreath easily without affecting the rest of the sign.
