5 ways to protect yourself from being the victim of crime

Being victim to a crime can have devastating effects that you may not even have considered until it happens to you. For example, many people who have had their homes broken into feel that they are no longer safe and so choose to sell their existing home, and for others, it can impact their confidence, self-esteem, and mental health.

That’s why you should try to put things in place to minimize the risk of it happening in the first place. Here are 5 ways to protect yourself from being the victim of crime.

Tell someone where you are

You can’t do this all the time but if, for example, you are going on a date with someone you met online or fancy a late evening stroll, tell a close friend or family member where you are going and when.

Many people come to harm when they are out alone, but if someone is looking out for you and checking in once in a while, it can minimize certain risks.

Protect yourself

There are various self-protection items you can buy nowadays that could come in handy if you are approached or threatened. Impact weapons come in many shapes and sizes and can be used to injure an assailant should they try and attack you. If you live in an area where gun and knife crime is more common, you may want to consider wearing armor plates when you venture out.

If you are looking for something discreet but functional, personal alarms are a great addition to your handbag or keyring and can be activated within seconds should you feel your safety is compromised.

Lock all doors and windows

It’s been reported that burglars will usually watch a home for a few weeks before making their move. So, if you typically leave windows ajar or doors unlocked, they may be aware of this, and your home could become a prime target. Keep everything locked when you leave the house and do the same at night.

They are more likely to strike during these periods, but if they think your home is safe and secure, they will be less inclined to try and gain entry.

Install security lighting

Intruders may try to hide in bushes or darker areas around your home before they make them move, which is when motion sensor security lighting comes in handy. It can be fitted reasonably quickly and cheaply but could vastly reduce the chances of a criminal feeling confident enough to access the boundaries of your property.

Video doorbell

If you want to know how great these are, you only need to watch some of the many videos uploaded to the internet. Video doorbells are not only handy, but they work wonders in terms of reducing crime. As well as providing the ability to see and record who is at your door, you can also have a two-way conversation with them.

Criminals will typically disappear rather promptly if they feel that their identity is known, so it could be the best purchase you have ever made.
