4 Alternative Treatments For Migraine

All opinions are mine and mine alone.

If you live with migraines, you know how awful they can be. It is estimated that about 10 percent of the population experience migraine and 80 percent of these are women. Sufferers experience intense head pain, alongside a host of other symptoms including vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. A migraine episode can leave you completely unable to carry out everyday activities. While a lot of progress has been made in recent years by researchers, there’s still no cure for the condition and many people are prescribed strong medications to keep them under control. But alongside medications, there are a number of things you can try in order to reduce the frequency and severity of the attacks.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used for hundreds of years for everything from fertility to back pain. Recent studies have shown that it is also effective in reducing the frequency of migraine attacks too.

The practice involves inserting very fine needles into various points on the body. Traditional believers in the practice believe that it restores positive energy flow around the body but if you’re looking for a medical reason to try it, it is thought the needles trigger a release of hormones and endorphins, both of which can reduce pain and inflammation. Also, acupuncture sessions can be very relaxing, which in itself is beneficial for chronic migraine patients.

CBD Oil

The popularity of CBD oil over recent years has skyrocketed. It is used to treat a range of conditions such as insomnia, chronic pain, nausea, and anxiety. Made from the cannabis plant, CBD oil has no hallucinogenic side effects and is now legal in many countries. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence amongst migraine sufferers that it can greatly impact the severity and duration of chronic attacks. More medical research is being carried out to see if this is indeed the case and would make a preferred treatment option.

CBD oil is available in a variety of options including drops, gummies, and vapes.

Massage

Many people with headaches and migraine find that they carry a lot of tension in their neck, back, and shoulder muscles. Tightness in these areas can trigger a migraine. A regular, firm massage can relieve this tension and reduce the number of migraines you experience.

Find a massage therapist who is used to working on people with chronic headaches or migraine. Massage is most effective when done regularly. Be careful of deep tissue or very firm massages as they could actually cause a migraine to get worse before it gets better.

Chiropractic treatment

Modern life is leaving us with terrible posture. Slumping over laptops and phones can really affect our spine and muscles. This in turn can lead to more migraines if you are already prone to them. A chiropractor adjusts your spine and other joints which can relieve pressure and restore blood flow. An initial course of regular treatments followed by an occasional maintenance session is usually enough to improve the condition of most sufferers.
