Most of us have our favorite recipes that we like to eat A LOT, which is fine unless those recipes happen to have a few more calories or unhealthy ingredients than we would like, then it can become a problem.
Luckily, it is pretty easy to make your favorite foods healthier as you will see…
Oven-fry your food
If you love fried chicken, or any fried dishes really, then you can save yourself a lot of calories by oven-frying instead. You’ll get the same delicious crunch without having to use nearly as much oil by dipping your meat or fish in your chosen coating, lightly spraying with cooking oil, and baking on a wire rack at 425° until cooked through and crispy. Give it a try it really is just as good!
Switch pork for chicken
Pork is delicious, sure, but it is also very fatty, If you are watching your wright or you need to go on a low-fat diet for your health, you can switch pork for chicken quite effectively in dishes like tacos and stews.
Think that doesn’t sound as satisfying? Check out this slow cooker shredded chicken recipe, which is just as rich and tender as the pork you love, for a fraction of the calories, and which can be used in everything from tacos and sandwiches to soups and noodles dishes too.
Thicken soups the natural way
If you’re making a soup that you would usually thicken with flour, which is full of empty calories and minimal nutrition, try throwing a chopped potato or two into the mix. When cooked through, blend your soup and the potato will naturally thicken and make the soup far creamier while also bringing more vitamins and minerals into the mix.
Use herbs and spices to cut down on salt
If you have high blood pressure, you may need to lower your salt consumption, but that does not mean that you will need to settle for flavorless food. Instead of using lots of salt, flavor dishes with garlic, curry powder, lemon peel, and thyme or a million different herb and spice combinations depending on what you fancy. The food will taste great and you won’t have to worry about your health.
Make banana ice creams
If you love ice cream for dessert but you don’t like what it does to your waistline, chop a few bananas, place the slices on a baking tray and freeze. Once frozen, blitz in a blender with a little vanilla extract or fresh berries to create your very own ice cream with far fewer calories and much more nutritional value. It sounds weird but it really does look, feel and taste like ice cream.
Switch to olive oil
If you love frying a steak in butter, you can easily get the same great flavor without all the saturated fat by switching to olive oil, which actually has seven times less saturated fat than butter.
Making your favorite meals healthier is, as you can see, perfectly possible with a few simple changes, and you know what? They will take just as good, so why not make a few changes to your favorites today?
