What Are the Different Causes of Vaginal Bleeding?

Abnormal vaginal bleeding can be the result of several different issues, especially if it’s not the time to menstruate. If you notice that you are bleeding between periods, then you should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Here are some conditions that could cause vaginal bleeding when you’re not menstruating.

Cervical Cancer

Most times, if you’re asking “why am i bleeding a week after my period?” it could be spotting between periods because the uterus may still have some blood inside of it. However, cervical cancer has much different symptoms than just spotting. You’re likely to experience vaginal bleeding after intercourse, between your periods, or after menopause. There will also be pelvic pain during intercourse, as well as watery, bloody vaginal discharge that might have a foul odor to it.

Hyperthyroidism And Hypothyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is when you have an overactive thyroid, while hypothyroidism is when you have an underactive thyroid. Both conditions can lead to vaginal bleeding because the thyroid gland is in control of hormone secretion. In the case of hyperthyroidism, you may also experience sweating, tiredness, muscle weakness, and increased hunger; in the case of hypothyroidism, you might experience these same symptoms in addition to fatigue and weight gain.

Perimenopause

This is the approach towards menopause where the reproductive system is starting to transition towards menopause. It can happen at different ages for different women, but it usually starts around sometime in their 40s. Estrogen will start to rise and fall at uneven levels, making menstrual cycles unpredictable. They might be longer or shorter than what a person might be used to.

 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Also known as PID, it is an infection of the female reproductive organs. This usually occurs when there is sexually transmitted bacteria that has spread from the vagina to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or the ovaries. The symptoms can range from subtle to mild, to the point that most women don’t even notice any symptoms. Symptoms do include pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis, unusual bleeding (during or after sex), fever, pain during sex, and painful urination.

 Vaginitis

Vaginitis is an inflammation of the vagina that can cause discharge, itching pain, and sometimes bleeding. This is caused by a change in the beneficial bacteria present in the vagina or some kind of infection. Vaginitis is a name for three different kinds of infections that can take place: bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginosis is the result of bacteria overgrowth in the vagina; yeast infections are caused by the growth of a fungus called Candida albicans; trichomoniasis is caused by a sexually-transmitted parasite.

There are a number of other conditions that could cause vaginal bleeding when you’re not experiencing your period. Some of them range to mild and treatable to severe conditions that do require medical intervention. If you notice that you are experiencing irregular vaginal bleeding, it’s always best to seek the attention of a medical professional so that you can receive a diagnosis and get the treatment options that you need.
