10 Environmentally-Friendly Changes To Make To Your Home & Lifestyle

All opinions are mine and mine alone.

In order to make environmentally-friendly changes to our home and lifestyle, we need to know what we’re doing already and what we’re not doing. As time goes on, our world is becoming more inhabited, and the demands that are being put on the world are not sustainable for much longer. It’s important that we’re making changes where possible to help sustain the planet for as long as possible. It means that future generations can benefit and enjoy their own time on earth without us having ruined it for them. With that being said, we can all make a difference, so here are ten environmentally-friendly changes to make to your home and to your lifestyle.

Learn More About What’s Recyclable

Firstly, there’s a lot of change that’s happened over the years, and as a result, a lot more of what we used can now be recycled. There are things that might not have been recyclable for before, but now there’s been enough development and advancements that they now can. It’s worth it to look at what you’re chucking out before throwing it in the trash to see if it’s something that can be recycled or even reused by your household. The less waste we can produce per household and business, the better.

A lot of us are making the effort to recycle, but not everyone is doing their part in doing so. It’s essential that we’re all making a conscious move towards recycling more. If you have reservations about whether or not something you have is recyclable, then check with your local governing body or online. There are a lot of resources available online that can give us more information on what can be recycled and what can’t.

Take Less Transport & Walk Instead

Transport is a contribution towards the environment and the more you use it, the more of an impact it’s going to make. It’s not just the use of bigger vehicles, but your car could have just as much of an impact on the state of the environment as any other vehicle would. It’s a good idea to try and consciously reduce the amount of transport you take. For example, if you’re commuting into a city or into work, then it’s worth finding ways of cutting your journey short in order to perhaps walk instead. If most people did this, there would be less need for frequent travel and that might help somewhat in the reduction of vehicles on the road, etc. Your workplace might have incentives in place to help you cycle to work or to put more money towards walking to work instead of driving or commuting on public transport.

Walking can also be a good way to see the world around you a little better and not to mention it’s free, so it saves you money. Not only that, but you’re giving yourself the chance to get some fitness into your day too!

Control Your Energy Usage

Energy usage is essential to monitor because we can often end up using quite a substantial amount as a household. It’s worth looking at what energy you’re using at the moment, and if you’re struggling to see how much, you could always contact your energy supplier and be provided with a smart meter. A smart meter can be a great way to understand how much you’re spending each day and what appliances are causing the biggest impact on your energy spending each day. With that knowledge being available to you, you can then work on reducing the frequency of these appliances but to also replace any that are perhaps less energy efficient in nature.

It can be good to see your energy usage because, like when you’re budgeting your own money when you see exactly what’s being spent, you make the necessary changes to help save you money.

Insulate Your Home

Insulation can be a great way of providing your home with more warmth, especially during the colder months of the year. Not only is insulation good for adding an extra layer of security around your home from the cold, but it’s also good for the environment. As you’ve insulated the home, it means you end up having to spend less on your gas and electricity. There are lots of options when it comes to insulation in order to suit everyone’s budgets and whatever condition the property might be in, whether there are already walls covering cavities or whether they’re exposed roof space that requires additional insulation material. Look at your options as there’s going to be something available for everyone’s budget.

Grow Your Own Food

Growing your own food can be a great way of making your home more sustainable and being able to live off yourselves. By growing various foods and herbs, you can make a sizeable reduction on your food consumption and spend that you make on local grocery stores and supermarkets. It’s worth looking at your outside space and creating sections dedicated to growing your own fruit, vegetables, and herbs. There’s no end to what you could grow in your back yard, but it’s worth starting of small and building up to the more complex fruits and vegetables that will need more management.

Being able to deliver food straight from your own property into the fridge or freezer can be a great benefit to the environment, so utilize this where possible in order to save money too!

Install Solar Panels

Solar panels are something that wasn’t so popular due to their expense but now that more households are embracing solar power, it’s becoming more affordable. Like anything that’s considerably more expensive to start off with, you can end up saving more money as it becomes a more popular commodity to use. With solar panels, the initial cost is something that you will end up making back in the future, and it can be a good thing to get for those in their forever home. In some cases, it can also help to boost the value of your home. If you can save more money, then it’s certainly worth getting these solar panels.

Think About What You Buy

It’s important to consider what you buy when it comes to changing your lifestyle and home living to be more environmentally-friendly. Think about what it is you’re buying when it comes to packaging and how long-lasting it will be. Trying to reduce plastic usage can be challenging as a lot of companies and manufacturers are using plastic to package their products. However, there are those that are trying their best to become more eco-friendly with their packaging choices, and you can do your bit as a consumer to pick those companies over others that use plastic or non-reusable packaging.

For some households, going plastic-free is something that they’re trying to reach, and so it’s good to try and do the same if you can.

Eat Less Meat

Eating less meat can certainly help the environment, and when it comes to meat, there are a lot more meat-free alternatives that actually taste like the real thing. Why not give some plant-based and vegetable products a try when it comes to replacing your meat consumption? Even for those that really love meat, it can be easier nowadays to find more meat-free alternatives, especially when dining out too. Consider how you can change your consumption and make the relevant changes to reduce it where possible

Add In Some LED Lighting

To help with your energy consumption, LED lights can be really helpful in saving money. Not only do they require less energy, but they also last for a lot longer than traditional light bulbs. Some can go years without needing to be replaced. Consider where you can implement more LED lighting and be sure to make a conscious effort to turn off said lights as and when it’s possible. Many of us can be culprits to leaving lights on in rooms that we don’t use. Make a habit of switching them off as and when you can.

Use Rags Over Paper Towels

When it comes to cleaning, it’s worth utilizing rags that can be washed and re-used, rather than paper towels that have to be thrown away after just one use. There are many companies that are making these products that are as useful as paper towels but can be more durable around the house. The same goes for cleaning products as many companies are producing more of the liquid that goes into the bottles in the form of reusable pods. The advantages of recycling are obvious, and the more you can retain, the better.

Making changes to your home and lifestyle is essential when it comes to our environment. There are lots that we can do to help our environment feel and look healthier – it’s not too late, after all. With that said, make sure you use some of these tips yourself to change your habits and to make your carbon footprint a little smaller. The more changes you can make, the better.
