Eco-Friendly Living: Simple Ways To Be More Sustainable At Home

It’s never been more important for businesses and the average consumer to start making eco-friendly changes. The condition of the planet is degrading faster than most of us can comprehend, although the most blatant impacts of pollution and climate change are becoming a lot more transparent.  Science predicts that we only have about a decade to halt the destruction in time to save the planet and humanity’s future.

So, we’ve listed ten simple ways that you can be more sustainable at home.

Switch To Solar

Switching to solar power at home can completely eliminate your power bill, which means you’ll save a small fortune every year. Even though the costs of installing solar energy systems can be hefty, these systems pay for themselves in the long run.

Moreover, Oregon’s green energy solar program helps to reduce the costs of installing solar energy systems while also assisting with the payback period. As a result, switching to solar is more accessible than ever before.

Avoid Single-Use Plastics

Single-use plastics add massively to landfills, enhancing pollution and threatening the wellbeing of wildlife and nature. For some of us, using disposable plastics has become something of a habit, and it’s costing you money and the planet’s health.  Switch to reusable plastics when it comes to storage containers and bottles. In addition, use washable fabric in place of plastic carrier bags. It’s a simple change that will save you money over time.

Switch To Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

Chemical household cleaning products are extremely harmful to your health; studies show that pregnant women that use ammonia-based cleaning products enhance risks of eczema and respiratory conditions for their infant. But these risks are also present for the pregnant mom and other family members.

In addition, chemical cleaners are just as harmful to the environment.

Switching to green cleaning products is the best solution to keep your home germ-free without harming the environment or your own health. You can even make your own eco-friendly cleaning products with ingredients like vinegar, bicarb, and lemon. These ingredients are also substantially cheaper than chemical cleaners.

 Use Energy-Efficient Lighting

Whether you decide to switch to solar or not, it’s still worthwhile to use energy-efficient light bulbs. With these bulbs installed, you’ll use less power regardless of the source.

 Wash In Cold Water Cycles

Another eco-friendly switch to consider is hot water wash cycles to cold water. Hot water washes might seem like the best option for the laundry. Although, this cycle damages garments faster as they wear down and fade sooner. Hot water washes also use more energy.

Cold water will keep your clothing in excellent condition for longer and keep your power bill ideally low.

 Save Bathwater For The Lawn

If you’re a plant parent or enjoy keeping your lawn well-manicured, you’re probably wasting a lot of water on a weekly basis.  Instead of using fresh water, you can save bath water and use this instead. Soapy bath water is also an excellent way to keep pests out of the yard and off your indoor plants. However, it’s not suitable to only use bath water for indoor plants; spring water and fertilizer are still essential.

Drive Less

With the price of fuel increasing dramatically in the past few months, it’s worthwhile for everyone to find ways to drive less. Beyond the fuel price, driving adds enormously to pollution.

Switch To Energy Efficient Appliances

Most modern appliances boast energy efficiency ratings as a new general standard. So, if your home’s appliances are outdated, you’re probably spending a fortune on your utilities every month.  Switching to energy-efficient appliances will reduce your consumption significantly. And if you’re a homeowner, this switch will boost property value.

Manage Indoor Temperatures

If cold and heat are escaping your home because the windows and doors are always open, your heating and cooling system will be working overtime, consuming a lot more power in the process.  Keep windows, and doors closed and replace the insulation every five to ten years if you are a homeowner. Other ways of insulating your home better are installing energy-efficient windows, adding area rugs, and sealing cracks and holes in walls.

 Install Water Temperature Control

There are quite a few innovative gadgets on the market that you can easily install to control water temperature. Most of these gadgets fit onto the faucet and mainly help regulate temperature.

There are so many ways to be more sustainable at home, and each sustainable choice you make will reduce your household expenses and improve your health and that of the planet.
